Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Reds played this series with all the intensity of a team that believes (quite mistakenly, I assure you) that they have the division championship all locked up. Cincy displays timely sabotage defense along with generally rotten pitching overall and bullpen chokes a-plenty.... Game 1: Possibly the most surgical game of the season, as Jose Rijo is torched for 9 runs in less than 3 innings and things don't get noticeably better even after he leaves. We got our share of baserunners too (17, only 2 less than we allowed) but did a far worse job of delivering clutch hits. Final score: 13-7. Tom Glavine isn't yet much of a pitcher or a hitter, but he did well enough at both jobs today. Game 2: The Reds allowed 0 earned runs in the first 9 innings of today's contest, but that was insufficient to ensure a victory. The game went into extras tied 1-1, so reliever Rob Murphy let his gopher out to play with Dale Murphy at the plate in the bottom of the 11th. Final score: 2-1. The ultra-hittable Pete Smith had the Reds batters fooled totally during his brief 5-inning start. Game 3: Another game where Cincinnati allowed 2 runs with just 1 being earned, but this time we scored 9. Ted Power pitched well and supplied a home run, one of 4 longballs the Reds launched against ATN starter Mike Morgan & 3 relievers. Game 4: Cincy blew leads of 1-0, 4-2 and 7-3 and donated another very costly unearned run plus THREE bases-loaded walks in one inning, thereby doing everything humanly possible to lose this game. The mission did not completely succeed however until Bill Landrum choked the game away after the Braves had 2 outs in the 9th and nobody on base. Final score: 8-7. Alan |
