Subject: Reds @ Giants

By handing the Giants 2 victories on a silver platter in this series, the Reds merely clinch a tie for the N.L. West championship.  So all we need to do to choke it all away is have the the Padres go 8-0, while we go 0-8 and then lose a 1-game playoff.  It's not terribly likely, but if there was ever a team who could do it....

Game 1: Nick Esasky, normally our #1 clutch player, had a bad day at the plate (K with runner @ 3rd and < 2 outs, then a GIDP) and a brutal one in the field (2 errors in one inning which gave the Giants all 3 of their runs, 2 of them laughably scored as "earned").  But Tom Browning offset that adversity with an excellent outing, scattering 4 hits and 0 walks in 9 IP.  The Reds eventually got our run total to narrowly exceed our error total and prevailed by the score of 4-3.

Game 2: The Reds blew a 3-1 lead in the 8th in the process of performing one of our patented late-inning chokes, which combined with a lengthy series of brutal baserunning split cards to result in a 5-4 loss in 13 innings.  Cincy outhit the Giants 14-9 and out-LOBbed them by an even greater margin despite all the baserunning blunders, while the losing run fittingly (given the split card pattern of the day) scored on a 2B 1-2, flyout 3-20.

Game 3: Jose Rijo pitched nearly as well as Browning had (6 IP, 4 hits, 0 walks), but the Reds needed some late runs to pull away and turn our 13-5 advantage in hits into a 7-2 win.  Steve Farr's ineffectiveness in relief of Rijo had cut the lead to an uncomfortably close 4-2 before we got back-to-back homers by Von Hayes (#41) & Eric Davis (#25) to provide important insurance.

Game 4: Speaking of powerful sluggers going back-to-back....  Ted Power was given an early 5-1 lead, and then the gophers came out to play for San Francisco just as the Cincy offense ground to a halt.  The lead was reduced to 5-4 on consecutive tape-measure home runs by Ray Knight (#2) and Jose Uribe (#3) and then erased entirely when Bob Brenly plated 3 runs in the 7th.  Final score: 8-6.
