Detroit keeps their slim playoff hopes alive by taking 3 of 4 in Kansas
City. Anything less may have been fatal, and almost happened in game 4.

Game 1: Joe Sparma (2-1) had his best outing of the season for Detroit,
throwing a complete-game five-hitter (and dropping his ERA half a point) in
an 8-2 victory. Jim Rooker (5-6) didn't survive a 6-run Tigers third
inning. Al Kaline and Tom Tresh combined for 7 of Detroit's 8 RBI.

Game 2: K.C. scored 3 in the first on Lou Piniella's homer, but the Tigers
scored 7 unanswered runs over the next eight innings to take this one by the
score of 7-4. Mike Kilkenny (4-4) pitched 7 strong innings for Detroit, and
Tom Timmerman got the final out to record his 20th save, preventing
super-choker Pat Dobson from letting it slip away. Willie Horton (#30) and
Norm Cash (#20) left the yard for the road team.

Game 3: Once again the team that jumped out to a first inning lead went on
to lose the game, and this time it was the Tigers doing the honors. Willie
Horton gave Detroit a 2-run lead when he slugged his 31st homer of 1969 off
Wally Bunker, but that was just about all the Tigers would get off Mr.
Bunker on this day.

Kansas City tied the game in the third, watched Detroit go back on top by a
run, tied it up again in the seventh, and won it in the eighth when Bob
Oliver smacked a leadoff homer off Detroit starter Jerry Johnson (6-5).

Tom Burgmeier got his first win of 1969 in relief, and Dave Wickersham and
Billy Champion (save #3) closed things out.

Game 4: A close one turned into a rout late. This pitchers' duel was tied
at 1 into the sixth, when HAL had Detroit outfielders Jim Northrup and Al
Kaline throw 2 balls away for errors, leading to 3 runs and finishing
starter Earl Wilson.

The Tigers came back with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth off
starter Bill Butler to re-tie the contest. HAL proceeded to bring in
reliever Mike Hedlund for the Royals, and all hell broke loose. Hedlund
allowed 7 runs on 7 hits in the ninth to drop his record to 3-13, while
Denny McLain (helping a depleted and ineffective Tiger bullpen) threw 3
solid innings of relief to raise his record to 14-12.

Dick McAuliffe excited the K.C. crowd with an inside-the-park home run
earlier in the game.
