Tom,

Thanks for the report.
You failed to mention that Tim Raines was also AWOL.
Not great usage management by me.

Steve

Subject: Chicago @ Montreal

This series turned out quite a bit differently after the revised cm
was received and Mike Schmidt and Andres Galarraga were not in the
lineup vs. RH starters.

G1 Chicago took an early 3-0 lead in the first 2 innings.  However,
one of the toughest calls for a manager is when to pull the starting
pitcher- particularly whether to milk him through the 5th inning.
Denny Walling was the recipient of young Greg Maddux's 2-out cripple in
the 5th and he blasted a 2-run triple to complete the Expos' comeback.
Harold Baines followed with an RBI single to provide insurance.

Montreal relievers allowed no Cubs' baserunners over the final 4
innings to seal the deal.

Final Score: Montreal 5, Chicago 3
WP- Heaton 15-8, LP- Maddux 6-12, SV- Burke (42)
HR- none

G2 was the most compelling game in the series.  Chicago's Les
Lancaster was trying to become the first Cubs' pitcher to win 10 games
this season, and he was opposed by the enigmatic Pascual Perez.
Chicago broke on top in the 1st when Fred Lynn muffed Ryne Sandberg's
flyball and he came around to score on Leon Durham's single.  Montreal
tied the game in the 5th when Steve Jeltz led off with a walk and
eventually scored on a passed ball.  Andre Dawson's 51st HR, a solo shot
in the top of the 6th put the Cubs back on top, 2-1.

It appeared Montreal was going to go scoreless for the 3rd inning in a
row when Bob James was summoned to face PH Luis Aguayo with 2 outs and
PR Herm Winningham on 1st in the 8th inning.  But, Aguayo muscled a
triple to score Winningham and tie the game heading to the 9th.

"Bull" Durham wasted time slugging a leadoff home run in the top of the
9th to deliver the win to the Cubs.  The Expos got Mitch Webster to 2nd
in the bottom of the 9th, but Chicago pitched around Walling in order to retire
Dave Engle for the final out of the game.

Lancaster ended up giving up an unearned run in 5 innings, but did not
get the decision; while Perez was dazzling at times- striking out 11
Cubs.

Final Score: Chicago 3, Montreal 2
WP- James 2-2, LP- Tibbs 2-1
HR- Dawson (51), Durham (37)

G3 started out fairly close over the first 6 innings as Chicago clung
to a 3-2 lead.  But, over the final 3 innings, the Cubs broke things
wide open - scoring 7 times off the Expos' relievers.

Four different Cubs hitters led the way (Sandberg, Dawson, Carter,
Clark) with HRs and 2 hits apiece.

Final Score: Chicago 10, Montreal 2
WP- Yett 5-4, LP- Nieves 12-12
HR- Sandberg (16), Carter (22), Dawson (52), Clark (4)

G4 featured the Cubs staff attempting to post its 3rd shutout of the
season.  Although they came up short, they were really just fortunate
to come out with a win.

Dawson supplied all of Chicago's runs with a 1st inning 2-run single
and an 8th inning RBI double.  But, in the 9th, Montreal rallied.
Webster singled before Luis DeLeon got the first out.  PH Mike Schmidt
greeted new reliever Jay Baller with a single.  Cecilio Guante was
then summoned and struck out Galarraga before walking Alonzo Powell to
load the bases with 2 outs.  Frank DiPino then came in to face lefty
PH Baines, but surrendered a run scoring single.  DiPino then forced
in a 2nd run when he walked Lynn.  But with his back to the wall,
DiPino induced Tom Nieto to ground out to end the game.

Final Score: Chicago 3, Montreal 2
WP- Swindell 3-11, LP- Smith 6-12, SV- DiPino (12)
HR- none

As requested, Mike Schmidt did not exhaust his usage.  He should have
one remaining PA.
