This would have been the 5th time they (and only they) had that honor. Game 1: Bruce Hurst tuned up for the playoffs with 5 shutout innings. Jimmy Key was also in top form (if not a little wild) as the teams were scoreless into the 9th. A Burks homerun gave the Sox a 1-0 lead. Danny Heap let a ball fall in for a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning. Bedrosian got a strikeout and popout and looked to nail down the shutout when Greg Walker got a 2 run homer on a 1-3 roll to give the Jays the 2-1 win. Boston may have set a record by leaving 6 men on in the first 2 innings without getting a hit. Key walked 6 in those two innings but only 1 more the rest of the way. He did hit Baylor though. Game 2: Showing that bad hitting hits bad pitching the teams woke up from their game 1 slumber. Rob Woodward threw 110 pitches in just 5 innings, allowed 11 hits (5 2b, 1 3b 2 hrs) with 3 walks and 9 runs and still got a W. Boston got 15 hits and 9 walks. After blowing a 6-3 lead after 3 1/2 innings the Sox fell behind 9-6 by the end of the 5th. Boston got 4 in the 6th to take the lead and tacked on 4 in the 9th to pull away for a 14-9 win. Boston had 7 doubles in the game. Greenwell had 3 hits and drove in 4 while Santana and Boggs added 3 hits each. Game 3: Boston took advantage of George Bell playing 3rd base as his 2 errors led to 3 unearned runs. By the second inning Sheridan was 2-2 and also 0-2 as a 67% jump (he would go 0-3 on jumps in the game). Greenwell's 3 run homer drove Clancy from the game in the 2nd and Boston was up 6-1 after 1. Boyd allowed a total of 4 hrs as he gave up 7 runs in 6.1 but still managed a W. Schiraldi came on and gave up a homer in his one inning to make it a 9-8 but Clark, Sellers and Bedrosian kept the Jays from getting the tying run. Game 4: Boston scored first for the 4th straight game, but Moseby led off the bottom of the first with a homer and the Jays added another run to take the lead. Boston tied it in the 4th but Jays got a 2 run homer in the fifth to take the lead. They added an insurance run in the 6th as Sellers gave up a homer to the only batter he faced. Sheridan tripled and scored in the 7th and Benzinger homered in the 9th to make the final 5-4. Both teams went to the bench heavily in this series and it showed. Boston won the LOB battle 41-22 for the series. Jays pitchers walked 24 and had 30 strikeouts while Boston went 4 and 22. Toronto outhomered the Sox 11-3.
