Subject: Twins @ A's
After a difficult week last week the Twins turn it around in a big way
as lady luck is once again smiling upon them.
The Twins sweep the A's in a key three game series. Game One featured
Twin starter Dave Boswell's best performance of 1969 so far, a 3 hit
shut out. He struck out 9 A's in the process. Harmon Killebrew and Tony
Oliva had homers for the Twins.
Twins 5 A's 0
Game Two:
The Twins hit Andy Messersmith hard for 5 runs in two innings and
eventually go up 7-3 after eight. Likely Cy Young winner Messersmith was
wild as he walked four batters in two innings as well. But, the Twin's
reliever Bob Locker tried hard to blow the game - along with some
assistance from Manager Rick Ramacier. Locker was brought in to pitch
the ninth with an 8 - 3 lead. Rick Monday led off with a pinch hit
single. Later, 2B Zolio Versalles (the Twins 65 MVP) doubled. Sal Bando
came up with runners on second and third and one out. Locker uncorcked a
wild pitch, scoring Monday and sending Versalles to third. Bando then
walked. Well, the smart manager would have brought in ace reliever Ron
Perranoski to face Reggie Jackson. But Manager Rick Ramacier went out to
visit Locker. Locker indicated that he had "no fatigue". Ramacier though
would out smart himself and keep Locker in so that a righty could face
the next batter, Richie Allen. Ramacier thought Allen (have you guys
seen his card against lefties!) should not face a lefty, so he stayed
with set up man Locker. Reggie made the best of the opportunity and
blasted a three run homer off of Locker's card. The score now 8-7. Well,
Locker remained in the game and gave up a single to Alllen. But, Manny
Mota flew out and Campy Campaneris popped out. And the Twins nearly
escaped a great A's comback.

Game Three:
The Twins and A's go to extra innings as the A's tie the game in the
bottom of the ninth off of a Campaneris single and a 2 base error for
Dick Allen off of an "excuse me" squib in front of home plate that Twin
catcher John Roseboro chucked into the foul territory along right field.
Man the foul territory at the Oakland Coliseum is expansive.
But the Twins Perranoski then retires the next three A's.
In the top of thenth, Cesar Tovar leads off with a triple. Rod Carew
then lays down a beauty to squeeze Tovar home for the go ahead run.
In the bottom of the tenth. The A's Bando leads of with a hit, but then
Perranoski retires Jackson, Cater, and Green to end the game.
This is the third time this season that Rod Carew has had the game
winning RBI on a squeeze bunt.
