Previous message                 Next message Message #: 23373 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Jan 9, 2011 Subject: Blue Jays @ Brewers It's looking like 1986 and 1987 all over again around here: the Reds get a morsel of good fortune once in a while, and that morsel is paid for (with interest) by the Jays.  This incredible series provides ample evidence....     Game 1: MLA's Teddy Higuera must be in fantastic shape to be able to go 11 innings fresh out of spring training.  Dave Stieb couldn't match him in stamina, but he came pretty close in quality.    The Jays blew a 2-1 lead when Dave Parker victimized his former owner with a game-tying gopher in the 4th, and no further scoring occurred until much later, when MLA stolen base attempts suddenly became automatic steals, plus the occasional error.  TOA reliever Rod Nichols put a runner on third with 1 out in the 12th despite not allowing a hit - yet; Dale Sveum immediately followed with the game-losing single.  Final score: 3-2 in 12.   =====================================   Game 2: Milwaukee got every surgical break on the way to a 10-0 lead, totally at the expense of stunned TOA starter David Palmer.  The Jays finally switched on the offense once the outcome had been safely decided.  Final score: 11-6.   =====================================   Game 3: Move over Joe Sambito, because (as was so clearly demonstrated throughout 1987, and once again today) you can't touch Tom Henke.   Toronto starter Jeff Mussleman, part of our 8-man rotation in 1988, was stifling the Brewer bats and holding a 2-0 lead until he hit a minor patch of ice in the MLA 6th.  With 2 runners aboard and 1 out, the Toronto manager smartly decided that Mussleman was through.  His next decision wasn't so brilliant.   Enter Tom Henke, whose FIRST PITCH of the season resulted in yet another "Perfect Sambito": 1 batter faced, one 3-run gopher, one lead forfeited and one game lost.   Not satisfied with giving his team any chance to recover from a mere 1-run deficit, Henke wasn't done sabotaging the Jays.  The first 2 batters of the MLA 8th singled, at which point he delivered one more fat pitch to his apparently good buddy Rob Deer, who collected 6 RBI courtesy of Mr. Henke's gopher.   Final score: Deer/Henke 6, Jays 2.   Alan
