sept 1

At Municipal Stadium the Kansas City A's were battered 7 to 1 by the New York
AL Yankees.

The Kansas City fans didn't appreciate the big day Joe Pepitone had.  He
rifled a three-run blast (his 24th of the season) in the 1st inning, slapped
a single in the 4th inning and doubled in the 9th inning.  New York AL banged
out 8 on the night.

Whitey Ford(6-12) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing
1 run. Catfish Hunter(8-8) absorbed the loss.  He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings
of work.

Joe Gaines cracked a homer and had 2 RBI at Municipal Stadium where theKansas
City A's beat the New York AL Yankees by the score of 4 to 3.

Kansas City promptly took the lead in their half of the first with 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Bert Campaneris kicked off
the action when he doubled.  Gaines was next and he singled.  Gaines got a
good lead and stole second.  Don Mincher was up next and he would ground out
knocking in a run.  Dick Green came to the plate and lashed a single scoring
the final run of the inning.  New York AL had a chance to come back in the
9th but they came up short.

Joe Sparma(7-11) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. Sparma
got help from Diego Segui who earned his 7th save.  Jim Bouton(3-11) was the
losing pitcher.  He pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk.

New York AL's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is
really hard to lose this kind of a game.  It may seem weird to some, but it
is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss.  It is the ones that just
barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

Al Downing blanked Kansas City allowing just 3 hits as the New York AL Yankees
topped the Kansas City A's by a score of 1 to 0 at Municipal
Stadium.

Downing(11-13) was simply too much for the Kansas City batters.  He didn't
allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.  Kansas City proved to be
no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Mike McCormick(6-6) suffered the loss.  He pitched 8 innings allowing 4 hits
and 3 walks.
