sept 1 At Municipal Stadium the Kansas City A's were battered 7 to 1 by the New York AL Yankees. The Kansas City fans didn't appreciate the big day Joe Pepitone had. He rifled a three-run blast (his 24th of the season) in the 1st inning, slapped a single in the 4th inning and doubled in the 9th inning. New York AL banged out 8 on the night. Whitey Ford(6-12) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 1 run. Catfish Hunter(8-8) absorbed the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings of work. Dick Green came to the plate and lashed a single scoring the final run of the inning. New York AL had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Joe Sparma(7-11) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. Sparma got help from Diego Segui who earned his 7th save. Jim Bouton(3-11) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 walk. New York AL's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
