Subject: Reds @ Braves
Cincy takes 3 of 4. Game 1: The Reds stomp all over George Stone and some relievers in an 11-2 rout. Don Wilson picked up the complete-game victory, and Lee May, Tony Perez & Johnny Bench went deep. Game 2: Cincy wins 4-1 behind a solid pitching performance by Jim McGlothlin (1 run in 8.1 IP). Hank Aaron smacked homer #40 for Atlanta's only run, and Bobby Tolan led the Reds with 3 hits including a double and a home run. Game 3: Here was a more typical Reds game: 10 innings, 23 runs, 32 hits, 6 errors. Cincinnati prevailed by the score of 12-11 as the Braves somehow managed to outchoke the visitors. The pitchers understandably prefer to remain anonymous. Atlanta jumped on top with a 3-run Orlando Cepeda home run in the first inning, but by the fourth Cincy was up 8-4. After six innings, the Reds held a slim 10-9 lead. Forced to go to ultra-choker Clay Carroll, the Reds watched in customary horror as a 2-run ninth inning lead evaporated before any batters were retired. The Braves have a very powerful lineup, but you don't need Aaron/Williams/Santo/Cepeda to beat the Reds: Bob Tillman drew a walk, and pinch-hitter Gail Hopkins sent one over the wall to tie the contest as Chief Nok-A-Homa went berserk. Fortunately, later that inning, Bob Didier was gunned at the plate to prevent the potential choke from turning into an actual one. In the top of the tenth with two out and nobody on, Pete Rose homered (completing the cycle) when centerfielder Jimmy Qualls (a 4) was unable to rob him. In the bottom of the tenth, the Braves once again saw a runner (Ron Santo, who had earlier contributed to the cause by committing 2 errors) gunned at the plate, which would have tied the game. Game 4: Another day of batting practice for the hitters, but this time only the Braves showed up. Tony Cloninger was clubbed early and often (even opposing starter Milt Pappas managed to homer - as if that's any kind of challenge against the hapless Cloninger), as the Reds went down to defeat 9-4.
