Previous message                 Next message Message #: 23712 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 6, 2011 Subject: Reds @ Giants The Reds come one patented bottom-of-the-ninth choke away from a sweep in a close series that featured four one-run decisions.  The Giants also handed the Reds a seemingly unlikely victory, but exactly which team choked harder in that contest is debatable....     Game 1: Bob Walk lived up to his name (5 free passes) but combined with John Franco on a 4-hitter and the Reds made 2 first-inning sac flies hold up for a 2-1 win.  Cincy outhit the Giants 9-4 but 0 of those 9 hits came in the clutch (a recurring theme in this series).  Big Daddy took the loss for the Giants, and although he has had some gopher problems so far in 1988 did not come close to allowing one to the Reds today.   Game 2: Like highly-touted Chris Sabo, Norm Charlton's rookie season has been pretty much a disaster so far.  But today he tossed 7 effective innings -- and was deprived of a win when ace closer Franco did this after the Giants were down to their final out: walk, wild pitch, walk, single, game over.  The Reds find that 27th out to be ever so elusive once again and lose by the score of 4-3.   Game 3: Danny Jackson was dismembered by a master surgeon in SFN's 5-run second, but amazingly the Reds didn't fold up entirely at that point; instead the Giants did.  We came back little by little and Buddy Bell's 7th inning homer gave the Reds a 6-5 win.  The surgical outburst notwithstanding, this contest should never have been in doubt.  Hits: CIN - 14, SFN - 7; LOB: CIN - 12, SFN - 2.   Game 4: Tom Browning should be allowing only 7.3 hits per 9 innings in 1988 and on the road that's just about what he's done.  But at home Browning cannot purchase a break: .326 BA allowed with .484 SLG @ Riverfront.  It's a good thing this was a road game then.   Browning got 2 hits, scored & drove in a run, and took a perfect game into the 7th.  He had still faced the minimum heading into the 8th, when he gave up 2 quick runs and left with nobody out, the tying run in scoring position and a 3-2 lead that had been suddenly reduced from 3-0.  But Rob Dibble tossed 2 hitless innings to earn the save and preserve the narrow victory.  Our LOB Machine was still working or the margin need not have been so slim: CIN - 10, SFN - 2.     Stat note: Gold Glove second baseman Bill Doran entered this series having blown only 4 x-plays all year; he blew FIVE x-plays in this series alone, all of them going for hits.   Alan
