G1 Leadoff hitter R.J.Reynolds set the tables nicely going 3-for-5 and scoring both the first and 4th Pirate runs of this one. Joe Carter had a costly error when he misjudged a flyball in the 1st inning, and the Pirates outlasted Chicago, 6-3. Pittsburgh added two late insurance runs when Andy Van Slyke tripled with 2 outs in the 7th and Felix Fermin singled him home.
Although both teams had 12 hits, 1 walk, and no home runs, the Pirates always seemed to have a lead that was slightly out of reach for the Cubs in the opener.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, Chicago 3 WP ? Candiotti 6-7, LP ? Tudor 7-5, SV ? Kipper (2) HR ? none
G2 Who would've guessed when noticing the starting pitchers were Rich Yett and Wes Gardner that the game would need more than 9 innings for fans to witness any scoring? Yet, I had arrived upon the 10th inning and that's just what had happened. Yett (6 2 0 0 0 1) held a no-hitter through 5 innings, and Gardner (8 2/3 3 0 0 5 5) was equally effective.
In the top of the 10th PH Steve Kiefer singled for his first hit of the season. After Mark Grace lined out (on a BP 1B), Ryne Sandberg slugged one over the fence to put the Cubs up by 2 runs. Although Keith Brown gave up back-to-back singles to Lind and Van Slyke to start the bottom of the 10th, Don Heinkel induced Mike LaValliere to hit into a bases-loaded game-ending DP to preserve the Cubs' 14th shutout of the year.
Final Score: Chicago 2, Pittsburgh 0, 10 innings WP ? Pico 1-2, LP ? Kipper 4-2, SV ? Heinkel (1) HR ? Sandberg (10)
G3 was the wildest game yet. Although the game changed hands 5 times, it wasn't necessarily a slugfest. Through 5 innings, the Cubs held a 5-4 lead with the big hit being Jody Davis' 2nd inning 3-run HR. Barry Bonds had already clubbed two homers to account for 3 of the 4 Pirate runs.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 8, Chicago 5 WP ? Minton 4-3, LP ? Moyer 4-4, SV ? Smith (19) HR ? Bonds 2 (16), Davis (5), Trillo (3), Reynolds (4)
G4 In the 2nd game of this series, Wes Gardner did everything he could to haunt me for trading him. In the finale, Drew Berryhill made good on the promise. The game had been deadlocked at 3-3 since the 6th inning. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, the game seemed destined for extra innings, but Berryhill deposited a Jeff Pico pitch over the TRS outfield fence and Pirate fans went home elated. Bucs win 3 of 4 at home.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Chicago 3 WP ? B.Jones 4-2, LP ? Pico 1-3 HR ? Kiefer (1), Bonds (17), D.Jackson (4), Berryhill (2)
Barry Bonds' series: 16 AB, 4 R, 7 H, 8 RBI, 2 doubles, 3 HR, and 1-for-2 stealing. Shouldda walked him! |
