Subject: BAA @ TEA Week 13 (and Week 14 CM)

Rangers and Orioles split, scoring 18 runs each.  Baltimore comes close to getting a no-hitter from a kid making his second ML start.

Game 1: BAA 5, TEA 3

Through six innings, Nolan Ryan allowed just one hit but was still locked in a 1-1 tie with Charlie Lea, who came into the game with a 7.18 ERA.  The last batter to face Lea, Ruben Sierra, scored on a 7th inning ground out, and Ryan left the game in the 8th with a 2-1 lead.  Baltimore loaded the bases in the 8th, but Mitch Williams retired Ripken to end the threat.  But Baltimore loaded them again in the 9th, and pinch-hitter Mike Heath – who had yet to homer this season – hit a decisive grand slam.  Texas rallied in the 9th thanks to two walks and an error before Cecilio Guante nailed down the save.  Texas outhit Baltimore 10-5, and two of those five hits came AFTER Heath’s grand slam.

Game 2: TEA 5, BAA 3

This was almost a mirror image of Game 1.  Again, each team managed just one run against the starting pitchers -- Kevin Gross of the Rangers and Baltimore’s Jose Bautista, who has pitched better than his 0-7 record would indicate. After the Rangers’ Pete O’Brien was thrown out at home in the 5th, the Orioles had runners on second and third with no outs in the 6th, but only managed one run.  The Rangers loaded the bases with no outs in the 7th and got one unearned run on a bases-loaded walk by Juan Eichelberger.  Keith Moreland broke the logjam in the 8th with a two-run double, but Eichelberger saved the day for the Rangers by giving up four hits, a walk, and the decisive four runs in the bottom of the 8th.

Game 3: TEA 9, BAA 4

Orioles “batted” around in the 3rd off Jose Guzman for four runs (the last four batters reached on three walks and an error.)  In the bottom of the frame, with two out and an open base, Jeff Ballard pitched to Pete Incaviglia, who promptly cut the score to 4-3.  Ruben Sierra tied it at 4-4 with a solo HR in the 6th, chasing Ballard; at that point each team had allowed just one earned run.  In the 8th Incaviglia struck again with another 3-run HR, this time off Bill Long, and Bo Diaz added a two-run shot for good measure.  Those were all earned, of course.  Guzman went the distance despite seven walks and a pitch count of 155.  Meanwhile, Long’s SMILEY ERA (8.50) is now more than double his real 1998 ERA (4.03).

Game 4: BAA 6, TEA 1

HAL acted like it’s 2001, pulling Rangers starter Bobby Witt after just one hit and one run in the 1st.  Happily for the Orioles, HAL didn’t interfere with spot starter Bob Milacki.  Up from the minors, Milacki took a no-hitter into the 9th before Pete O’Brien hit a one-out single.  2-0 with a 1.56 ERA, Milacki would of course be the Orioles’ ace… but he only gets one more start this season.
