Subject: game 163 MNA at DEA final game of season results
In a netplayed game today the Detroit Tigers have captured the AL pennant by defeating the Minnesota Twins by a score of 4 to 2. The game was initially scheduled to be played in MNA but technical difficulties forced both teams, with league approval, the catch a flight back to Tiger stadium for the game. No action at all until the second inning when, after a Horton walk and a Norm Cash single, Willie Horton was nailed attempting to score (1-14) on a Bobby Wine fly ball. In the 3rd inning the Tigers rallied after Eddie Mathews and Jake Wood coaxed walks from MNA starter Joe Gibbon. A Tony Conigliaro single scored Mathews and Willie Horton followed up with a 3-run HR (his 27th of the year) to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. In the top of the 4th the Twins threatened but Ed Charles was thrown out (1-14) trying to advance to third on Frank Quilici's single to end the inning. Plenty of baserunners the rest of the way but the Twins could only manage two 7th inning runs on a Jimmie Hall single and an Earl Battey sac fly. Tiger veteran Johnny Podres came into face Twins slugger Jimmie Hall in the ninth with a runner on and 2 outs and was able to induce a groundout with his first pitch to seal the victory for the Tigers. Bob Friend picked up his 21st victory of the season by pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings, scattering 7 hits and 2 walks. Thanks to Kevin for the well-played game. Now it's onto to Cincinnati for the victorious Tiger crew. Steve PRESMILEY Tigers 1965 AL Champions --- USFamily.Net - $8.25/mo! -- Highspeed - $19.99/mo! --- |
