Dear Giants and Padres, If you have given up on winning the N.L. West in 1988, please reconsider *immediately*. I won't let you down. Signed, Hal ========================== Game 1: Tom Candiotti consistently baffled the Reds with his knuckleball, while Tom Browning fooled nobody with whatever it is that he throws. Cincy had a 1-0 lead until Browning suffered a pair of gopher bites in the middle innings and Steve Farr closed it out with a 3-walk, 2-hit, 3-run performance in the PIN 8th that squelched any possible comeback. Final score: 6-2. Game 2: The Reds were up 5-1 in the 8th and about to even the series, when HAL absolutely demolished the Cincy defense. Four unearned runs later, 3 of which scored after we got the second out in the bottom of the 9th, the Reds had pulled off a choke of epic proportions, albeit with a LOT of help. Final score: 6-5 in 10. The Reds blew 3 consecutive x-plays in the bottom of the 9th that began with a seemingly harmless yet game-costing dropped pop foul that would have been the third out. Not content with that, HAL had Barry Larkin blow yet another (3 in all) x play in the 10th to complete the choke. Game 3: Three more timely unearned runs contributed to Tim Leary's unraveling and forfeiture of Cincy's 3-1 lead and Farr again helped the bleeding continue. Final score: 8-4. The Reds had an efficient offense today, stranding only 2 runners, but we could have used more runs and less 'efficiency'. Game 4: Today's leads that were choked away were 4-2 and 5-3 as Bob Walk's final start for the Reds turned out poorly. Jose Rijo provided some effective middle relief, but Farr yet again got the job done for our opponent in extra innings. Final score: another 6-5 10-inning loss that completed the unlikely (?) sweep.
