New manager attached. Pascual Perez took his no hit bid into the ninth inning only to be done in by Dick Schofield. Mike Scott took his no hit bid into the eighth inning only to be done in by Rick Schu. Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?
Game 1 Right fielder Darryl Strawberry blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI and Dwight Gooden went 6 solid innings as the New York NL Mets topped the reeling Montreal Expos by a score of 4 to 2 at Shea Stadium.
Strawberry enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 2nd inning, ripped a single which plated a run in the 6th inning and doubled knocking in a run in the 8th inning. Randy Myers pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 16th save.
Scott Terry (7-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Floyd Yuma’s (1-3) took the loss in relief. This win by New York NL continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are a division leading 77-46. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.' Game 2 David Cone mowed down 11 Montreal batters as the New York NL Mets beat the ice-cold Montreal Expos by a score of 4 to 3.
Cone (15-4) gave New York NL a solid outing. He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Cone got help from Randy Myers who was credited with his 17th save. Bryn Smith (7-10) absorbed the loss. 'Everything felt great' Cone said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.' Game 3 Pascual Perez took a no-hitter into the 9th inning as the Montreal Expos defeated the New York NL Mets 4 to 0 at Shea Stadium.
Perez (8-9) came through with a virtuoso performance against the New York NL hitters. He didn't give up much, just 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. Perez recorded 10 strikeouts. The right-handed Perez lost his no-hit bid when Dick Schofield singled with one out in the 9th inning. Montreal finished with 9 hits in the victory.
Frank Viola (12-9) took the loss. 'I had my good stuff tonight.' Perez said. 'As the game went along I started to get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.' Game 4 Mike Scott didn't allow a hit until the 8th inning as the New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by a score of 10 to 2.
Scott (10-8) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Montreal hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Scott lost his no-hit bid when Rick Schu singled with nobody out in the 8th inning. For the game New York NL out-hit Montreal 13 to 4.
Bob Forsch (1-5) was given the loss. He was unable to control the New York NL offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
The winning ways continue for New York NL. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'
