Toronto overcomes an avalanche of adverse split cards and takes 3 of 4 as the extra base hits were flying all over (and out of) the park for both teams....

Game 1: Dave Stieb had an easy day on the mound while the TOA offense reached Jose Bautista for 4 home runs.  Final score: 9-1.  Stieb combined with Juan Agosto on a 5-hitter, Ron Hassey homered twice and Greg Walker notched his first of the campaign.

Game 2: Jim Clancy's nightmare of a season continues unabated as he was surgically dismembered early and often (as usual) but the Toronto batters could not do a damn thing with Jeff Ballard.  Final score: 8-1.  Ballard tossed a complete-game 2-hitter, walking nobody and fanning 7.  This is routine stuff for Ballard (only against the Jays), who tossed the only shutout of his career against TOA earlier in 1988, though the rest of the A.L. hasn't found him to be all that mysterious.

Game 3: TOA starter David Palmer pitched almost as badly as Baltimore's Ozzie Peraza but Duane Ward chipped in with 3 scoreless relief innings which saved us from blowing all of our 6-1 lead.  Final score: 6-3.  Scrap heap pickup Don Gordon continues to excel for the O's, as today he provided 2.2 scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 0.66.

Game 4: Bud Black faced some brutal first-inning surgery, but the Jays came back and were cruising to victory when Tom "Super Choker" Henke temporarily saved the day for the Orioles.  A Henke relief outing just wouldn't be complete without a critical gopher, and our 7-4 lead instantly became a 7-7 tie and the contest proceeded into extra innings.

Other than Henke the bullpens were generally very good: Agosto & Nichols combined for 8.1 scoreless innings for the Jays while Schmidt & Mirabella tallied 10.1 IP worth of goose eggs for the home team.

Finally in the 15th Walker came through with his second longball of the series and the Jays escaped with an 8-7 win.  Walker, who has spent nearly all of 1988 in the minors, was 5 for 7 in the game with a double and home run and is currently batting .381; a nice contrast to the massive underachievers who populate the rest of the Toronto lineup.

Alan
