Subject: Chi @ NY

4 pertinent sets of stats to ponder:
(Through 130 games, NL rank in parentheses)
HR- Chicago 130 (2), New York 127 (3)
HRA- New York 70 (1), Chicago 104 (6)

(through 134 games, 18 head-to-head contests)
HR in head-to-head contests- New York 26, Chicago 6
Wins in head-to-head contests- New York 12, Chicago 6

Obviously, the margin NY maintains in HR advantage this season is significant and substantial.  But, adding a +20 over 18 games in HR advantage has made all the difference between 1st and 2nd place this year.  The strange thing is... I can't even seem to roll bp HR opportunities for the Cubs.  Sothe 4th inning, 2-2, on a 2-run HR by HR by Len Dykstra off of Greg Maddux (6 5 2 1 1 3).  That score held until the 7th when Chicago scored 2 runs   In the bottom of the 7th, the Mets made it, 4-3, by plating a run due to Ernie Whitt's long HR.  The Cubs closed out the scoring on Mark Grace's and Darrin Jackson's RBI-producing doubles in the 8th inning.

Final Score: Chicago 6, New York 3
WP- Maddux 15-8, LP- Ojeda 11-5, SV- Bair (2)
HR- Dykstra (4), Whitt (14)

G2 finished with the same score as the first game, except it was reversed.  Despite knocking out 9 hits against "Doctor K," the Cubs only managed 2 runs against him in 6 2/3 innings.  Meanwhile, Gregg Jefferies,3 8) was tremendous in this one as he rode the wave of support to a rout of the Cubs.  However, Darryl Strawberry was the true star of this game.  The "Straw" put the Mets on the board, 1-0, with a solo HR in the 1st inning.  In the 3rd inning, the Mets increased their lead to 3-0 when Strawberry's 2-run dinger scored Mookie Wilson.  In the 5th, Straw added a 2-out RBI double, and in the 7th, the big man homered for a 3rd time scoring Wally Backman.  In the9th, he struck out in attempting to hit his 4th bomb in one game.  Strawberry's final line: 5 3 4 6, 3 HR, 1 2B.

Final Score: New York 10, Chicago 1
WP- Cone 16-4, LP- Pico 5-4
HR- Strawberry 3 (30)

G4 became the first pPalmeiro, but the Mets came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th when Kevin McReynolds homered with one out.  The 2-2 tie held until the top of the 12th.  Chicago came away with 5 runs due to 2 costly errors by the Mets and a variety of singles and walks surrounding them.  This allowed the Cubs to win rather easily despite NY getting yet another home run in the bottom of the inning by Keith Hernandez.

Final Score: Chicago 7, New York 3, 12 innings
WP- Heinkel 2-1, LP- Aase 2-2
HR- McReynolds (21), Hernandez (10)

For the record, in 4 games, the Cubs felt quite fortunate for the split after being clubbed by a 10-0 margin in home runs.  Files are attached.
