Game 1 Tom Glavine came through with a solid 9 innings at Fulton Co Stadium where the Atlanta Braves beat the floundering Montreal Expos 2 to 0.
Montreal was unable to claim the lead after Atlanta went ahead in the 3rd inning scoring one runner. Terry Blocker hit a bases-empty home run. Glavine got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. That scoring would be all that was needed. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again.
It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Glavine (7-17). Pascual Perez (8-13) was hit with the loss. 'Glavine pitched a gem of a game', Steve Bivens recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'
Game 2 Ron Gant slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Fulton Co Stadium where the Atlanta Braves beat the struggling Montreal Expos 6 to 5.
Pete Smith (3-15) was lucky to get the win as he struggled out there tonight. He gave up 5 runs in 6 innings. Jose Alvarez was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 11th save.
Jay Tibbs (7-11) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Smith said, 'this was one of those times.'
Game 3 Nelson Santovenia hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos topped the pathetic Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 3 at Fulton Co Stadium.
Mark Langston (9-13) had a solid outing for Montreal . He went 7 innings allowing 6 hits and no walks. Langston racked up 8 strikeouts. Montreal had 13 hits overall, while Atlanta had 8.
Tim Burke earned his 21st save. The losing pitcher was Kevin Coffman (1-4). He allowed no hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Game 4 Dale Murphy connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Fulton Co Stadium as the Atlanta Braves beat the pitiful Montreal Expos in 10 innings 7 to 6.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Atlanta won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Jeff Treadway doubled. After an out was recorded, Terry Blocker stepped in and he lined a one-base hit giving Atlanta the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Montreal was out-hit by Atlanta , 15 hits to 11.
The winning pitcher was Jose Alvarez (8-6) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Andy McGaffigan (4-9) was tagged with the loss in relief.
