Subject: Chicago @ St.Louis
G1's key inning was the 2nd. St. Louis patched together consecutive singles by Mike Pagliarulo, Tom Pagnozzi, and Milt Thompson for one run to start the inning, and starting pitcher Jose DeLeon hit a sac fly to score the other run although Milt Thompson was thrown out at 3B attempting to advance which ended the inning prematurely. DeLeon (6 3 1 1 0 5) outpitched Scott Bankhead (6 5 2 1 0 5) to pick up his 11th win on the season to go with a stellar 2.94 ERA on the season. Doug Jones and Todd Worrell nailed down the win with 3 innings of 1-hit relief work. Vince Coleman stole 2 bases and now has 93 for the year.
Final Score: St.Louis 2, Chicago 1 WP- DeLeon 11-17, LP- Bankhead 9-6, SV- Worrell (34) HR-
none
G2 was another low-scoring affair between the rival clubs. New pickup N.Keith Miller tripled to lead off the game and scored on a Darren Jackson grounder. St.Louis tied it in the 2nd when Willie McGee legged out the first of his two triples and went on to score due to Rafael Palmeiro's poor throw to 3B. Chicago broke the 1-1 tie in the 5th on Greg Maddux's 2-out single that scored Luis Salazar. Both teams traded runs in the 7th, but the Cubs held on to win by one run. Jeff Pico retired 6 of the 7 batters he faced to record the save. The game featured four triples in all (incl. Vince Coleman's 7th of the season, McGee has 9), but strangely enough- no SBs.
Final Score: Chicago 3, St.Louis 2 WP- Maddux 18-10, LP- Magrane 10-9, SV- Pico (7) HR- Medina (4)
G3 continued the trend of well-pitched, low-scoring, competitive games.
The Cardinals broke to an early 2-1 lead after 4 innings by way of a 2nd inning Luis Alicea RBI-groundout and a 3rd inning Terry Pendleton RBI-single. The Cubs turned that 1-run deficit into a lead in the 5th inning by taking advantage of a 1-out error by Ozzie Smith. PH Jody Davis and Steve Henderson each followed with singles to score one run. One out after Ryne Sandberg walked to load the bases, Joe Carter delivered a 2-run single to break the 2-2 tie. That would be it for the scoring as the Cubs' bullpen pitched scoreless baseball from the 5th inning on. Mike Bielecki somehow was assigned the win which will prevent him from being winless in 1988. SB update: Coleman 94, O.Smith 66.
A tough season didn't get any easier for hard-luck loser Richard Dotson (6 7 4 1 3 3). Tony Pena went 3-for-3 for the Cards.
Final Score: Chicago 4, St.Louis
3 WP- Bielecki 1-3, LP- Dotson 3-9, SV- Assenmacher (13) HR- none
G4 In the highest-scoring game in the series, the Cards broke it open early by scoring all 6 of their runs in the first 3 innings off of Greg Swindell (5 7 6 6 1 3). Pedro Guerrero had an RBI triple before coming around to score in the first inning and McGee slammed a big 2-run double in a 4-run 3rd inning. Chicago knocked out Calvin Schiraldi (1 1/3 2 2 1 0 1) in the 2nd inning, but that worked out to the Cubs' disadvantage as John Costello, Larry Andersen, and Todd Worrell held Chicago to 2 runs in the final 7 2/3 innings.
Season stolen base totals in the final Busch Stadium game of 1988- Coleman 95, O.Smith 67, Sandberg 20. The Cubs' rookie Gary Varsho smacked a double to avoid going hitless in 1988 (1-for-11).
Final Score: St.Louis 6, Chicago 4 WP- Costello 2-3,
LP- Swindell 18-13, SV- Worrell (35) HR- none |
