Subject: boston at detroit
Detroits hitting woes continue (at least in first 3 games) as Boston wins 3 of 4 to tie detroit in the standings... game 1: Gary Peters and Denny McLain were locked in a scoreless pitchers duel through 7 innings. Mike Andrews led off the 8th with a walk and stayed there as Menke and Yaz made outs. However Reggie Smith stepped up and smashed one almost over the roof in right field.. Lindy McDaniel picked up his 12th save despite giving up 3 hits in the 9th. Boston 2 Detroit 0 game 2: Another pitchers duel, this time between Ray Culp and Mickey Lolich. Detroit managed a run in the 3rd when Denis Menke booted an easy grounder with 2 outs. The score stayed that way until the 8th inning. Russ Gibson led off with a single, then pinch hitter Jerry Moses reached when defensive replacement Tom Matchick made a great play but then threw the ball away for a single + error to put guys on 2nd and 3rd..(Detroit had the same setup in the bottom of seventh but didn't score when Mickey Lolich was thown out at the plate on a flyball). Rich Morales grounded out keeping the runners put, but Lolich then threw a wild pitch to score one, and Rico Petrocelli singled in another to give boston the lead.. McDaniel came in again and gave up 2 straight singles before striking out pinch hitter Ron Stone and getting Tony Taylor to line into a dp to end the game. Boston 2 Detroit 1 game 3: Willie Horton homers in the 2nd to give Detroit the early lead again, but this time boston doesn't wait until the 8th inning to score. boston tied it in the 5th and went ahead in the 7th. With 2 out, Andrews reached on a Melton error and Menke then launched a 2 run homer. Boston would add runs in the 8th and 9th to complete the scoring.. Boston 5 Detroit 1 game 4: boston wasted no time scoring in this one. After lead off hitter Bill White struck out, Menke and Yaz singled before Reggie SMith launched a 3 run homer. Detroit finally figured out how to score, just roll on the pitchers card... Detroit used a pair of 3 run homers on 5-10 rolls to take a 6-4 lead after 5 innings. Boston tied it in the 7th on a Yaz 2 run homer...Detroit scored 2 in the 8th to win the series finale. With 2 out and 2 on, Mickey Stanley (who had one of the hr's) lifted a ball into the gap that reggie smith called off Carl Yaztremski, and then promptly let it fall for a double.
