Subject: Opening Day report from Arlington
The Blue Jays once again have first place talent; the Blue Jays once again have last place luck, and it took no time at all for us to prove the latter. Toronto blows leads of 1-0, 4-2, 5-4, 6-5 (in extras) and the choke is finally completed in 12 innings by the score of 7-6. Greg Briley led off the 1989 season with a walk -- and was immediately gunned down trying to steal. How very appropriate that our first split card of the season was a 20. The teams combined for 7 home runs in the contest, and while the Rangers got some good work from their bullpen after starter Shawn Hillegas was vanquished, the Toronto bullpen is sadly in midseason form already. Not that starter John 'SuperGopher' Cerutti was any better: after retiring the first 5 batters he faced in 1989, he allowed a gopher to Mickey Hatcher. Cerutti apparently enjoyed that so much that he immediately allowed another to Rick Cerone. Cerutti would cough up one more costly gopher in the 6th, at which point he was finally yanked. Then with just 4 outs left in the contest, Duane Ward allowed a 2-out RBI single that tied the game in the 8th. Toronto broke back on top when Briley launched a solo homer in the 11th, but Tom Henke (ever-reliable Tom Henke) rose to the occasion and quickly returned the favor in the bottom of the frame. Not nearly through with his multi-year campaign of sabotage despite having outstanding cards, Henke yielded a triple leading off the 12th and 2 batters later the game, which unquestionably will be representative of the season to come, was lost. The super-efficient Texas offense stranded just 4 runners in 12 innings, perhaps aided to a small degree by our tremendous clutch pitching performance. Alan |
