Previous message                 Next message Message #: 24552 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Jul 10, 2011 Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers The raw numbers show a lopsided outcome to the series, but the Jays just had to find a way to reduce a probable sweep to a split....   Batting average: TOA .303, TEA .221 Hits: TOA 47, TEA 30 Total Bases: TOA 84, TEA 56 OBP+SLG: TOA .917, TEA .692 Runs: TOA 27, TEA 17 ERA: TOA 3.58, TEA 6.00 X-pct: TOA .882, TEA .610   ================================================   Game 2: A Toronto starter (Todd Stottlemyre this time) blows a 4-2 lead and allows back-to-back gophers for the second consecutive day, and contributes 2 more important unearned runs via his own error.  But today our second-tier lefty relievers Agosto & Wells combined for 6.1 IP, 3 hits, no walks, 7 K's and -- most importantly -- no runs while the two guys with the awesome cards who choked in game 1 sat and watched the remainder of this series from the doghouse.   George Bell, Junior Felix and Phil Bradley led the offense to a 5-run comeback and a 9-6 win.  Rich Dotson started for the Rangers and fared no better than Hillegas had in game 1, but today we avoided the choke for a change and it was the Texas bullpen who wasn't up to par.   ================================================   Game 3: A matchup of staff aces Ryan & Stieb; neither one was at his best as they posted almost identical numbers, but one of them got all the breaks and -- of course -- that one wasn't Stieb.  Final score: 3-1.  Stieb limited himself to just one gopher today, but that 2-run bite cost us the game during TEA's surgical 4th inning in which all of their scoring took place.    In his TOA debut, Tim Hulett had 3 hits including a solo homer off of Ryan's card.   ================================================   Game 4: In a rarity, a Toronto starting pitcher had an effective day and wasn't even touched by gophers!  Bud Black scattered 3 hits and went the distance in today's 11-1 rout.  The rout didn't actually occur until the final frame, where we *finally* got our first 2 chances at Texas's generous BP homer capability in the 39th inning of the series.   Rookie outfielder Junior Felix homered twice including an irrelevant Grand Slam in the 9th & collected 5 RBI, and the slowest player in the majors (Lance Parrish) somehow stole a base.
