Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 1 (and Week 2 CM)

The Red Sox start strong by sweeping the Orioles, and the one close game of the three was the one that hurt the most.

Game 1: BOA 14, BAA 4 (but you already knew that, I guess.)

Game 2: BOA 4, BAA 0

Almost all the scoring was over by the end of the 1st, when Ron Kittle hit a 3-run homer off Jeff Ballard.  Meanwhile, former Oriole Mike Boddicker once again stifled his former teammates, taking a no-hit bid into the 6th inning.  Boddicker and reliever Joe Price each allowed one harmless two-out single.  The lone bright spot for Baltimore was Mark Williamson, who threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Game 3: BOA 5, BAA 4

In the top of the 2nd, in a sign of the apocalypse, Boston’s Dwight Evans made a two-base error.  After Baltimore failed to capitalize, Evans stuck back with a double, scoring on Mike Greenwell’s two-out single.

Then we got to the hit-and-run portion of the program.  Baltimore’s first run was scored in the 3rd by Daryl Boston only after he missed on a hit-and-run attempt, getting Tony Phillips thrown out at second.  In the 4th, after the red-hot Kittle hit a two-run homer, Greenwell also missed on a hit-and-run, but the luck was with the Red Sox as Jody Reed beat the throw…. only to be thrown out at third when Rafael Ramirez missed on yet another hit-and-run attempt.  The O’s Mike Devereaux at least made contact on his 5th inning attempt, but the Red Sox got the force at second.  Finally, in the bottom of the 5th, Wade Boggs hit and Willie Randolph ran, scoring on Evans’ sac fly to bump the lead to 4-1.  Unable to resist, Joe Orsulak hit into a fielder’s choice on his 6th inning attempt.

The hit-and-run tally over that four-inning stretch --

Baltimore: 3 attempts, 0 hits, 2 fielder’s choices with no runners advanced, 1 caught stealing

Boston: 3 attempts, 1 hit with an extra base taken, 1 SB, 1 CS

The Red Sox tacked on another run on a 6th inning sac fly.  Baltimore then added some late-inning suspense.  A solo HR from Franklin Stubbs in the 7th and a two-run rally in the 8th cut the lead to 5-4.  In the bottom of the 8th Boston loaded the bases, only to be shut down by O’s closer Gregg Olson.  The Orioles then put runners on the corners in the 9th, but the game ended on a Cal Ripken groundout.

So we go back to Baltimore and try to blame the bad week on the weather.
