Subject: Reds @ Expos
Despite the massive amount of talent it contains the 1989 Cincy bullpen is, as always, an unmitigated disaster area. The Arson Squad tried valiantly to blow all 4 games of this series by permitting 7 runs in barely 8 IP (Rob Dibble in particular is choking at a Sambito-esque gopher rate) and the only surprise was that they only "succeeded" once.... Game 1: The Reds plated a run in the first and would never score again. But we didn't seal the loss until the final batter of the game, when Andres Galarraga gophered one off of Dibble in the bottom of the 9th. Final score: 2-1. Dennis Martinez got the win and Tim Belcher pitched just as well as Martinez but his effort was wasted. Cincy stranded FIVE runners at third base, as O'Neill's RBI single in the first was our lone clutch hit of the day. Game 2: Cincy made quick work of MON starter Bryn Smith on the way to an early 7-0 lead, which Jose Rijo then tried to give away. Final score: 8-4. After Calvin Schiraldi created a tense save opportunity out of thin air in the 9th, Norm Charlton fanned Pete O'Brien on 3 pitches to end the contest. Ricky Jordan may be breaking out of his early-season slump, as today he homered twice and drove in 5 while raising his average above the .200 mark. Game 3: Today's 4-run lead in the bottom of the 9th was just barely enough to escape with a 5-4 win. Tom Browning's quality start was almost forfeited as Belcher's had been, with Randy Myers doing the majority of the arson work though Dibble followed Myers with a critical 2-run double that almost blew it. Cincy LOBbed 10 more runners today, 7 of them in scoring position. Game 4: In today's bullpen disaster, it was Charlton nearly choking away a 5-0 lead and Schiraldi (after allowing a critical hit, naturally) coming to the rescue to preserve Cincinnati's suddenly narrow 6-5 win. Montreal amassed 5 doubles and a triple among their 11 hits, with their entire offense occurring after being shut out through the 7th inning. Alan |
