Padres sweep a series that had just about everything happen. Game 1: Both teams hit 2 home runs, the difference was how many were on each time. The Cubs got 2 solo homers while SD got a 3 run homer by Clark and a 2 run shot by Templeton to provide all their offense in the 5-4 win. Padres had other chances to score as they left 12 men on base (chicago left 6). Clark and Alomar had 3 hits each to lead the 10 hit attack and Chicago pitching tossed in 8 walks as well. Murphy pitched a scoreless 9th to nail his 7th save. Game 2: Here is where it gets strange. Must have been glove day in Wrigley and the first 9 customers got the gloves from the Cubs starting lineup. Cubs made 5 errors (4 in the first 2+ innings). Walton started the game with a 2 base error and McClendon followed by misplaying Alomar's bunt attempt. Carlos Martinez doubled in both runners. Atlee Hammaker was also in a charitable mood. 3 of the first 7 batters rolled 6-4 and all settled for doubles (2 more would get that later in the game and only 1 was a hr). Add in a 6-6 roll and the Cubs put up a 4 spot in the first. A single+error and 2 walks loaded the bases for the Padres with one out. After Alomar lined out (11 on a 1-10 bp single) Gwynn singled in one run and Martinez walked to force in the tying run. The inning finally ended when Wilson missed a bp grand slam chance. Padres took the lead in the 3rd when Roberts tripled and came around on the 4th Cubs error of the game. OTher than the 6-4 blitzkrieg, Hammaker was effective in his 6 innings. He allowed 7 hits (5 6-4's and a 6-6). He left with the lead after Templeton tripled in a run and scored on a sac fly in the top of the 7th. Cubs got one back in the 8th. Murphy came on with 1 out in the 9th and allowed a single and double but the tying run was gunned at the plate to end the game. Game 3: Cubs get a 6 run 2nd and lose by 5. Padres used 5 singles to score 3 runs in the top of the 2nd. The lead lasted 3 batters in the bottom of the inning. Single, double, hr (auto bp) and it was tied. Rasmussen got the next 2 batters before Maddux singled (w power), walton got a 10 on a 1-10 chance and Sandberg got a 5 on his 1-5 single. Dawson then scored 2 on a cf(x) single to complete the carnage. Padres used 2 doubles and 2 singles in the 3rd to get back within one and then tied it in the 4th when Gwynn doubled and came all the way around when Medina misplayed the ball. Padres took the lead in the 6th with 2 runs. Mullineks walked with the bases loaded (after Clark was intentionally walked) to force in the 2nd run. HAL apparently didn't learn his lesson as he intentionally walked Santiago with 2 outs in the 8th to load the bases. Wilson misplayed a comebacker for 1 run and then Sheffield cleared the bases with a double to cap the 5 run inning. Not wanting the home team fans to go away mad, Farr threw back-to-back wild pitches in the bottom of the 8th to score two runs. Final damage 33 hits (17-16 SD favor) and 13-8 score. Gerald (89% jump 11% out) Young was 0-2 with 2 automatic outs trying to steal in the series. |
