I can no longer be frustrated since I’ve already blown up the team but it’s hard to imagine winning fewer games even without Raines, Baines, Burke and Cary. Goodbye my friends!
Don’t hesitate to jump into my nightmare and claim yourselves a decent player: DiPino, Galarraga, Jeltz, Pettis, Ready or Reed. Take a look.
Game 1 Mark Grace hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos were badly beaten by the Chicago NL Cubs, 12 to 2.
Paul Assenmacher (3-1) came through for Thomas Treece with an excellent relief stint. He did not allow a base runner in his 2 and 2/3 innings and whiffed an impressive total of 5 Montreal batters. Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning.
Chuck Cary (0-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed a few too many base runners giving up 10 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings.
The win by Chicago NL is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in recent days. Their record now stands at 19-17 - only 1-9 in their last ten games. With the loss Montreal now has a record of 13-26, worst in the division.
Game 2 In an entertaining game at WRIGLEY FIELD the final score was the Chicago NL Cubs 8, the Montreal Expos 5.
Ryne Sandberg helped send the fans home happy. He electrified the crowd with a Grand Slam home run in the 3rd inning and stroked a one-base hit which plated a run in the 7th inning. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win was credited to Mike Bielecki (1-5) who went 8 innings allowing 4 runs. John Dopson (0-5) suffered the loss. He surrendered 3 homeruns in his 6 innings.
'You have to give Montreal credit; they fought us tough to the end' Thomas Treece said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
Game 3 Ernest Riles had 2 base hits as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 5 to 4.
Doug Bair (2-1) was dominant in relief. He allowed just 1 hit and no walks in 2 innings. Chicago NL banged out 7 hits on the night.
The loss was charged to Frank Dipino (1-3) in relief. He surrendered 3 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings and saw his ERA increase from 3.20 to 3.86.
Game 4 Greg Swindell was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 2 to 1.
Chicago NL had 1 run cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Swindell (6-0) allowed 1 run on the game. Bryn Smith (4-4) was hit with the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
