The Cubs finally started to play better on the road, and in this series at the Stick, found the starting pitching that had been expected to help them contend. It appears the NL East is now a 3-team race.
G1 featured a fine pitching duel between the righty Mike Bielecki (8 1 1 1 3 9) and the LHP Terry Mulholland (7 2/3 7 2 2 2 7). All the runs in this game came off the starting pitching as Chicago held on for a close one-run victory. Both teams scored a lone run in the 3rd inning. Chicago's Luis Salazar's 1-out single knocked home Mike Bielecki (who had doubled leading off) to open the scoring, and Stan Jefferson's sac fly scored Bret Butler in the bottom of the 3rd although the Giants did not tally a hit in the inning. Chicago pushed across the winning run in the 8th inning.
Ryne Sandberg doubled with one out and one out later, Andre Dawson doubled him home.
The GIants' lone hit was a leadoff single by Clark (1-9 roll) in the 6th inning. Kevin Mitchell promptly banged into a DP to kill that potential threat. Pat Perry got the first Giants' out in the 9th and Lee Smith got the last 2 as SF went down in order. Due to a Bielecki hit batter and an error by McClendon, the Giants left 4 men stranded in the game. Shawon Dunston's 3 hits led all batters and Salazar had 2 hits- one of which supplied his early RBI.
Final Score: Chicago 2, San Francisco 1 WP- Bielecki 2-5, LP- Mulholland 1-2, SV- Smith (8) HR- none
G2 again featured great starting pitching. San Francisco broke open a scoreless tie in the 6th when Devon White's squeeze bunt scored Robbie Thompson. Trevor Wilson (7 1/3 3 2 2 5 4) kept
the Cubs off the board until the 8th when Dawson's 2-run home run brought in Sandberg. The Cubs added two insurance runs in the 9th as Mark Grace singled home Dunston and Jack Howell. After allowing Mitchell and White to reach base in the 9th, Lee Smith promptly struck out the side to record his 2nd consecutive save.
Mike Jeffcoat (7 5 1 1 1 3) matched Bielecki's effort in the opener as he also recorded his 2nd win. No batter for either side had multiple hits, but both Dawson and Howell added 2 BBs to their lone hit for the Cubs.

G3 allowed the hometown fans be let down again as even the very hittable Rick Rhoden (7 5 1 1 4 4) stymied the SF bats. This time the score was 1-1 going to the 8th inning. Luis Medina strode to the plate as a
PH for Rhoden with Howell (who had reached on an FC) at first base. Medina hit a long HR and the Cubs led 3-1. Both teams scored once before the game ended, but the Medina blow was the deciding hit. The Giants' Mitchell became the first SF hitter to record a mult-hit game in this series by going 2-for-4. The Giants only had 14 total hits in the 3 games.
