You have to work pretty hard to score any runs against this San Francisco staff; fortunately the Reds had one (and only one) batter who was up to the task, as Jeff Hamilton just about singlehandedly won us two games.  The other two we never had a chance....
 
 
Game 1: Tim Belcher has pitched FAR better in 1989 than his record (3-5) and ERA (3.52) indicate, and today was no exception.  Belcher combined with Randy Myers on a 3-hitter, walking 2 and fanning 10 Giants -- and losing by the score of 2-1.  Devon White's triple and Fred Lynn's homer supplied the SFN offense, while the Reds got damn near nothing against Scott Garrelts & Steve Bedrosian.
 
Game 2: The Reds had no sooner tied the game on Hamilton's first 2-run homer of the day than Tom Browning gave the Giants the lead right back.  But Hamilton struck again with a runner aboard in the 6th and Cincy held on for the win against our nemesis Don Robinson.  Final score: Hamilton 4, Giants 3.
 
Game 3: A near-repeat of game 1, as Rijo & Charlton held San Francisco to 4 hits but Devon White (who entered the series batting about .185) tripled for the third consecutive game and the Giants parlayed their 4 hits into 3 runs.  Meanwhile, Big Daddy Reuschel was nearly unhittable.  Final score: 3-0.
 
Game 4: Seconds away from losing the series, Hamilton saved the day again.  Down 3-0, the Reds loaded the bases with one out in the 9th.  After Ron Jones failed to deliver anything but the second out of the inning, Hamilton cleared the sacks with a double to tie the game.  Then in the 11th the Reds struck for 3 more runs against Frank Wills and escaped with a 6-3 win and a series split.  Calvin Schiraldi tossed 4 hitless innings in relief of Ron Robinson to get the win.  Schiraldi is now 5-4, a ton of decisions for a reliever just 1/3 through the season.
