Previous message                 Next message Message #: 24870 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Sep 5, 2011 Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees The 1989 Jays find themselves again in the highly irregular and baffling position of *getting* some breaks on the road instead of being constantly victimized by them.  Despite mediocre pitching from both the starters and the bullpen, plus a potentially-fatal dose of timely sabotage defense, the Jays pull off another sweep....     Game 1: Greg Cadaret's charmed season of inexplicable unhittability continued today (5.1 IP, 2 hits) for the Yankees, and even the 7 walks he issued during that brief outing weren't costly.  So Toronto's biggest break came when Cadaret was yanked in the 6th inning.  Trailing 5-1 in the 8th, the Jays finally pounced on the Yankee bullpen for 7 late runs and won by the score of 8-5.    Toronto scored 5 times in the 8th on 7 hits -- all singles -- and a wild pitch against Cano, McDowell & Guetterman.  Duane Ward notched save #8 and Juan Agosto was awarded the win after pitching one ineffective inning in relief of starter Bud Black (6 IP, 5 baserunners, 4 runs, 2 unearned).  The Toronto offense was bound to plate some runners eventually (LOB: TOA - 10, NYA - 4).   ================================================   Game 2: Dave Stieb's miserable luck shows no sign of reversing, as today he permitted 8 hits & 3 walks in just 6 innings, but tenaciously held onto our early 4-0 lead by getting the Yankees to strand almost as many runners as we did.  Final score: 5-3.  NYA had cut the 4-0 lead to 4-3 but Lance Parrish delivered an RBI double in the 9th to provide valuable insurance.   Duane Ward finished off the 9th by just barely NOT allowing a 'Perfect Sambito' to Jesse Barfield, who somehow actually missed the 3-run BP homer chance that would have given the Yankees the win.   ================================================   Game 3: Todd Stottlemyre ran his 1989 record to 4-1 with 7 solid innings in today's 4-3 win.  David Wells made things tight by allowing an unearned run in the 9th, but Tom Henke fanned Barfield to end the contest.  Barfield did homer once against his former teammates during the series, but also went 2 for 14 and made the final out twice.   Alan
