In the battle of foot coverings the Red comes out on top of the White 3-1 game 1: This one started out slowly but quickly got ugly. Boston used a single, bunt, single in the first to get on the board. Burks hit a 2 run homer in the 4th and Boston blew it open with 4 runs in the 6th, using 4 singles and a walk to do the damage. Boston added 4 more in the 9th when Dempsey hit a 3 run homer and Burks followed with his 2nd of the game. Meanwhile Boddicker was cruising along allowing just 5 hits in his 7 shutout innings. The only trouble was when Downing was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch a triple into a home run. No fear for the shutout as Hall came in and walked his customer batters (3 in 2 innings) and allowed a 9th inning solo homer. Boston had 19 hits in the 12-2 win. Burks and Dempsey combined to go 6-9 with 6 runs and 9 rbi's. game 2: Bergmann's 3 run homer capped a 4 run first. Greenwell doubled in a soon to be much needed insurance run in the 6th. This time it was Rick Mahler who was cruising along through 6 shutout innings before Babe Quinones made it interesting. He entered the game 12-56 with 1 rbi. He hit not 1 but 2 2 run homers among his 3 hits. The first came in the 7th and the second came with 2 outs in the 9th (both were off the pitchers cards) to make it a 1 run game. Knudson recovered for the 3rd out to save the 5-4 win. game 3: Clemens did not have the luck of the first 2 Boston starters, especially with HAL rolling his 6 column in key spots. almost always with 2 outs. A 6-5 2 out single gave Chicago a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. After Boston tied it in the 4th, a 2 out 6-6 single gave them the lead back in the 5th. Fisk followed with a 3 run homer to all but end the game. Another 6-5 single drove in the Sox's 7th run in a 7-2 Chicago win. The only run that wasn't due to Clemens' 6 column was a bp homer. game 4: The White Sox defense had an inning from hell and the Boston bullpen is just from hell pretty much sums up this one. Boston scored 7 runs in the 2nd thanks to the White Sox defense. Stillwell gave up back to back x play singles (the first a runner held) and then Wallach and Raines made back to back errors later in the inning. Greenwell followed the errors with a 3 run bp homer. Hal obviously felt bad and started the White Sox 2nd with back to back 6-5 rolls for a double and homer. Boston added 2 in the 5th and led 9-2. Chicago started their comeback with a hr in the 7th ( on yet another 6-5). Sanderson started the 8th and allowed a double before being pulled for Knudson, who allowd that run to score and gave up another in the 9th to make the final 9-6. Boston may be the first team to hit and allow the opposition to hit at least .280. They are hitting 293 while the opposition is at .278 (and climbing). Can't wait for the seasons where pitching is bad :-( |
