Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 9

(No new CM this week.)

Baltimore took two of three on a bizarro road trip to Boston.

Game 1: BAA 8, BOA 7 (11 innings)

This was a sloppy but exciting game, with four errors, runs scoring on a wild pitch AND a passed ball, and a staggering three blown saves.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first, when the first batter for each team tripled and scored.  (What are the odds on that – especially with Brady Anderson entering the game hitting .174?)  A two-run homer by Craig Biggio off Roger Clemens in the 3rd gave Baltimore a 3-1 lead, which lasted about 10 minutes.  In the 6th, Baltimore got a VERY unearned run.  Biggio singled. Cal Ripken missed on a hit-and-run, forcing a steal attempt that ended with the ball in center field and Biggio on 3rd; he then scored on a passed ball.  The Orioles escaped a bases-loaded Red Sox rally in the 7th with the rare 3-2-3 double play and added yet another Biggio run in the 8th, only to see Ellis Burks tie the game with a two-run homer.  Still in the 8th, Boston loaded the bases with 0 outs, then endured two straight force-outs at home before Mike Greenwell singled in a run for the first Red Sox lead of the night.  Down to their last out, the Orioles drew a walk to set up Cory Snyder’s two-run homer – Baltimore’s only runs without Biggio’s involvement.  The Red Sox were also down to their last out when Wade Boggs doubled off Gregg Olson to tie the game at 7-7.   But Olson wound up with the win when a depleted Orioles lineup eked out the winning run in the 11th on a wild pitch, set up in part on a walk by… yeah, Biggio.

Game 2: BAA 5, BOA 0

Baltimore took a 4-0 lead in the 2nd, fueled by Anderson’s 3-run blast that sent Mike Smithson to an early shower.  The Orioles squandered almost every other scoring opportunity, but it didn’t matter as Jim Abbot pitched five perfect innings en route to a three-hit complete game shutout.

Game 3: BOA 13, BAA 7

The O’s took another early lead with a three-run first off Larry McWilliams.  The Red Sox answered with three in the 2nd off Dennis Cook, but Baltimore answered with four more runs in the 4th (fueled in part by a rare timely hit by Cal Ripken.)  As the Orioles missed opportunity after opportunity, Boston clawed back to a 7-6 deficit, and then blew the game open with a decisive seven-run rally in the 7th off virtually every Orioles reliever.  Every Red Sox player scored during this game (and probably after.)
