West will be pleased to know that the Cincy luck has officially returned to normal -- rock bottom -- in all phases of the game.  We got surgically blown out, then choked away 2 games that should have been won and came just one run away from monster-choking away a third....     Game 1: ATN's John Smoltz had the game of his life -- not so much on the mound where he allowed 12 baserunners including 6 walks & a home run, but at the plate: Smoltz went 2 for 2 with a gopher & 2 RBI and scored 3 times.  Even more damaging than his homer was his surgical split card single with 2 outs in the 2nd that led to FIVE runs when John Farrell fell completely apart at that point.  Final score: 9-3.  Cincy had numerous chances to score, but another aspect of Smoltz's brilliance was getting the Reds to find gb(A)'s at every critical opportunity.   Game 2: The Disaster That Is Tim Leary took the mound with the Cincy season beginning to slip away, and actually pitched well (for him), going the distance on a 6-hitter.  But 4 of those 6 hits went for extra bases, including a right-at-the-split-card-limit BP homer by Glenn Davis that gave the Braves a 3-2 win although Atlanta was outhit by 50% and allowed more walks than the Reds as well.  ATN starter Chuck Finley was very generous with the baserunners but all that caused was an 11-6 'win' for Cincy in the LOB category.  Which was nothing compared to:   Game 3: Tim Belcher was given an early 3-0 lead; Braves win 4-3.  Today's stats included an 11-6 advantage in hits for the Reds and a massive 14-4 victory in LOB.  The choke was finally completed in the ATN 8th when Rob Dibble allowed a single, 2 SBs and a sac fly.  Ex-Red Jeff Treadway, now a Hornsby-esque slugger at second base, gophered for the second game in a row.   Game 4: Apparently one of the keys to success is to NOT pitch well, like Leary and Belcher sort of did.  No problem in that area today as Tom Browning was pitiful on the mound, choking away every Cincy lead but the last one.  The Reds narrowly avoided the sweep by the score of 9-8.  The unlikely heroes were catcher Alex Trevino (4 for 5, 2 RBI) and shortstop Rene 'Treadway' Gonzales, who solo-homered twice off his own card; Gonzales had 3 career homers in 300+ plate appearances prior to this contest.  Dibble gophered up the almost-tying run in the bottom of the 9th but then fanned Blauser & Murphy to avert another disaster.   Alan
