Previous message                 Next message Message #: 24912 Message from: Charlie Steinhice Sent: Sep 14, 2011 Subject: BAA @ MNA Week 10 (and Week 11 CM) Playing like they did in spring training, but hardly ever since, the Orioles took three of four in Minnesota.   Game 1: BAA 1, MNA 0   As 1-0 shutouts go, this one wasn’t pretty, but it was exciting.  The Twins got at least one hit off the O’s Jeff Ballard in each of the first five innings, but failed to score each time.  Meanwhile, Baltimore finally got its first hit off Rick Sutcliffe in the 5th by Craig Worthington -- who was promptly caught stealing, the first of three such Orioles (two of whom showed “0% out trying”.)  Baltimore also went 0-for-3 on attempts to bunt for a hit.  Baltimore scored its only run after a two-out, bases-empty double by Randy Milligan and an RBI single by Tony Phillips.  In the bottom of the ninth, Orioles closer Gregg Olson earned an ugly save after the Twins loaded the bases with one out.   Game 2: BAA 9, MNA 4   This time, Baltimore got its first hit in the second – a three-run homer off Sid Fernandez.  Gary Gaetti answered with a two-run shot in the same inning off Jim Abbott, and the Twins took a 4-3 lead on a two-run single by Glenn Hoffman in the 4th; Baltimore tied it in the 6th on doubles from Craig Biggio and Keith Moreland, then blew the game open in the 8th thanks to a bases-loaded pinch-hit triple by Phillips and a sac fly by Snyder.   Game 3: BAA 6, MNA 4   The Metrodome fans were treated to a rare sight in the first inning: a hit by Cal Ripken Jr. with runners in scoring position.  A two-out double by Joe Orsulak gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead and chased Twins starter Ron Darling.  Perhaps the O’s should have done the same to Dennis Cook when the Twins tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the inning.  Baltimore retook the lead in the 2nd on a solo HR by Daryl Boston.  Another RBI double from Orsulak, offset by a Gary Gaetti solo homer, pushed the lead to 5-4 after the third.     In the bottom of the fifth, Twins reliever Gary Wayne gets a 1-2-3 inning – the first for either team in the game.   Apparently that inspired the Orioles pitchers as Cook, Cecilio Guante, and Olson didn’t allow a single baserunner in the last 4 innings.  Another RISP hit by Ripken (mirabile dictu!) in the 7th completed the scoring.   Game 4: MNA 1, BAA 0   In his first ML start, Pete Harnisch gave up just three hits over 6 2/3 , but Minnesota’s Allan Anderson outdid him with 0 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings. The only run of the game came in the 2nd inning on aggressive baserunning by the Twins’ Gaetti.  The Orioles had to content themselves with a little Schadenfreude: After several such misfires in the first three games, they took comfort in watching the Twins have a botched hit-and-run and a runner picked  off first.
