After finishing this 4-gamer against the superior pitching the Expos have, it makes me wonder how Montreal is not in the race for the NL East crown.

G1 observers witnessed Bryn Smith's (6 2/3 6 2 1 1 4) ERA lower to 1.97.  That ended up being just enough to get by Rick Rhoden (6 7 4 3 4 5) and reliever Jose Nunez.  2B Johnny Ray began a tremendous series by going 3-for-4 with a double and seemingly being in the middle of all the Montreal rallies.  Leadoff hitter Gary Pettis raised his average to .273 with a 1-for-2 night including 2 walks and 2 stolen bases.  Reliever Jerry Reed pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to record the save including his pitching past a leadoff walk to PH Doug Dascenzo in the 9th.

Final Score: Montreal 4, Chicago 3

G2 This time starter Pascual Perez cruised until the 6th while Expo hitters pounded Cubs' starter Jeff Pico to a 7-0 lead.  The Cubs began to come back on Perez with a 2-run triple by Luis Salazar in the 6th and a 2-run HR by Joe Carter in the 8th.  But, as Frank DiPino recorded his first ever save against his former team, Chicago was 2 runs shy this time.  Nelson Santovenia joined Ray with 3 hits in the second game as Montreal pounded out 16 hits in all.

Final Score: Montreal 7, Chicago 5

G3 The Cubs finally broke through late against the Montreal bullpen to break into the win column.  Through the first 7 innings, Montreal mostly had its way against starter Scott Bankhead (7 5 6 6 3 6) by hitting 3 HRs.  Randy Ready had a solo shot, but Mark Davis hit 2 blasts as Montreal built a 6-3 lead behind starter Mark Langston.  Langston (7 7 6 6 3 6) stayed in the game one inning too long, however.  Luis Medina's PH single tied the game at 6-6, and Shawon Dunston's sac fly put Chicago into the lead in the 8th.  The Cubs added 3 insurance runs in the 9th when Andre Dawson cleared the bases with a big blast against his former team.  Ryne Sandberg and Dawson each had 3 hits and combined for 7 RBI in this contest.

Final Score: Chicago 10, Montreal 6

G4 showcased one more strong outing by an Expos' starter.  John Dopson (8 5 2 2 3 5) cruised into the late innings with a 4-run lead and won his 3rd game of the season.  Ray had hits in all 4 games and recorded his 3rd multi-hit game in the finale while knocking home 3 runs.  Pete O'Brien, Spike Owen, and Eddie Williams each added 2 hits for the Expos, while no Cub fit that category.

Final Score: Montreal 6, Chicago 2
