Game 1 The hometown crowd was rewarded with a dramatic ending, as the Pittsburgh Pirates staged a comeback win over the Montreal Expos by the count of 4 to 3.
Pittsburgh came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs using 2 hits. R.J. Reynolds kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Todd Benzinger came next and he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Eric Anthony came up and he slapped a base-hit. Gary Redus followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. Luis Rivera stepped into the box and doubled. Pittsburgh had 8 hits for the game and Montreal had 5.
Bill Landrum (8-3) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Jerry Reed (0-4) in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1/3 of an inning.
'What a game!' Landrum said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't believe it!' Game 2 In a thrilling finish the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 8 to 7.
Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning when they scored 5 runs on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Bobby Bonilla who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6 different innings was still not enough for Montreal to come away with the victory.
Bob Kipper (2-3) allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the victory. The losing pitcher was Jerry Reed (0-5) in relief. Mike Mashanic was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Steve Bivens, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short end of one of these!' Game 3 Dennis Martinez delivered 8 solid innings as the Montreal Expos bested the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings 3 to 2 at THREE RIVERS STADIUM.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Montreal was victorious in the 11th inning. Pete O'Brien laced a single. Mike Fitzgerald stepped up next and he hit a single. Mike Davis then reached on an error. Nelson Santovenia followed and he hit a sacrifice fly. Montreal had 9 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 4.
The win went to Ted Power (1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Power got help from Andy McGaffigan who was credited with his 1st save. Rick Reed (1-2) was charged with the loss. Game 4 Left fielder Barry Bonds cracked a homer and had 2 RBI at THREE RIVERS STADIUM where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the dreadful Montreal Expos by the score of 7 to 5.
Bill Landrum (9-3) slammed the door shut in an excellent relief performance. He surrendered only 2 hits and no walks in 3 innings. Pittsburgh managed 9 hits in their victory.
Jerry Reed (0-6) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits in 2 innings.
