Automated queries? I don't know of a way to do so. But, if you start in the 1990's, and run through the rosters of the four teams, you can pretty quickly start seeing common names. By the way, is Pat Borders still active? If so, he's a third one. (Von Hayes isn't still active, is he?!? Reminds me of the greatest baseball quote of all time: When Len Dykstra & Hayes were teammates with the Phillies, Hayes was traded away for some assortment of minor leaguers, I think. Anyway, Dykstra was asked, "What do you think of the Von Hayes trade?" His classic response: "Great trade. Who'd we get?") -----Original Message----- From: Alan Boodman To: SmileyList@egroups.com Sent: 8/1/00 7:23 PM Subject: RE: [SmileyList] OK, smart guys..... A-HA!!!! You can do queries at baseball-reference.com? That would be cool, but I don't see anywhere to do them. I'd sure like to have an easy way of determining which players switched teams between 1968 & 1969 for example (for obvious reasons). Can something like that be done anywhere that you guys know of? I have an old librarian friend who was involved in smoke-filled-room politics and the sleazy world of opposition research. (Anybody remember the story a few years ago about Tennessee governor [?] Bill Frist using stray animals as test subjects for his medical school experiments?) Anyway, he always used to say: "When it comes to information, never f*** with a librarian." baseballreference.com is a truly amazing website. -- Ben -----Original Message----- From: Alan Boodman To: SmileyList@egroups.com Sent: 8/1/00 7:12 PM Subject: RE: [SmileyList] OK, smart guys..... All right - how did you do that? Sheesh, ruin it for everybody..... :-) Alan -----Original Message----- From: Lea, Ben [mailto:bjlea@...] Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2000 8:10 PM To: 'SmileyList@egroups.com ' Subject: RE: [SmileyList] OK, smart guys..... With the seventh round pick of the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago White Sox will take anyone BUT Jeff Juden. Everybody, sing along: What do you do with a bored librarian? What do you do with a bored librarian? What do you do with a bored librarian? Early in the morning. -----Original Message----- From: Alan Boodman To: SmileyList@egroups.com Sent: 8/1/00 6:34 PM Subject: [SmileyList] OK, smart guys..... Here's a trivia(l) question for you all: Through 1999, exactly ONE player in major league history has played for all 4 of our unowned teams: Indians, Phillies, Astros & Angels. Who is he? Hints: don't bother thinking back too far - he played in the 1990's, and he was (or perhaps still *is*) a pitcher. And those weren't the only teams he played for; he pitched for at least 4 others as well. First person with the correct answer is awarded the Reds' 7th round pick in the 1968 draft. Honorable mention: excluding Torey Lovullo (since I have no idea if he's still playing), there are 5 ACTIVE players (3 pitchers/2 hitters) who have played for 3 of the 4 unowned teams - who are they? Hint: 4 of the 5 are currently in the A.L., and two of those are teammates. Good luck, Alan To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: SmileyList-unsubscribe@egroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: SmileyList-unsubscribe@egroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: SmileyList-unsubscribe@egroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: SmileyList-unsubscribe@egroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: SmileyList-unsubscribe@egroups.com |
