WIth the exception of the finale, this was a remarkable series. G1 Scott Terry came in with an ERA almost 6.00, but he shut out Chicago for 6 innings as New York built a 3-0 lead on a Len Dykstra 2-run single and a Howard Johnson sac fly. In th 7th, the Cubs stormed back when Jack Howell hit a 2-run homer and PH Luis Medina went back-to-back to tie the game, 3-3. Both bullpens held the fort and the game proceeded into extra innings. Chicago had the first rally as they loaded the bases with walks after two outs, but Don Aase pitched out of his own jam by getting Shawon Dunston to ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Keith Hernandez led off with a walk, pinch runner Kenny Willams stole 2nd and 3rd while Dykstra struck out, and after a walk
to Gregg Jefferies, the Mets had runners at 1st and 3rd with no one out. Pat Perry then replaced Doug Bair and got Johnson on a short flyball and Kevin McReynolds on a groundout to close out the 10th. The Mets came right back again in the 11th, but had a strange strategical decision. With one out, Ken Griffey doubled and Mark Carreon singled to put runners at 1st and 3rd. However, with Domingo Ramos at the plate, Carreon was thrown out trying to steal 2nd base. Ramos grounded out to end the 11th inning. In the top of the 12th, Ken Griffey booted a ball while playing 1B which allowed Dwight Smith to bat with 2 outs. Smith homered to put the Cubs up, 5-3. The Cubs committed an error in the bottom of the 12th, but the Mets followed with only a single by Jefferies instead of a home run, and failed to score. Final Score: Chicago 5, New York 3, 12
innings WP- Assenmacher 6-2, LP- Gooden 2-4, SV- L.Smith (13) HR- Howell (10), Medina (6), D.Smith (7) G2 For Mets fans disappointed in the G1 result, they received a fantastic comeback at Shea in the 2nd contest. Mike Bielecki (8 7 6 6 6 2) was cruising through the first 7 innings, as the Cubs built a 7-1 lead behind 3 long balls including Lee Mazzilli's clout that led off the contest. In the 8th, New York began its comeback. Darryl Strawberry singled home one run, and Ernie Whitt doubled home two more to make the score, 7-4 going to the 9th. I didn't use my best judgement this time in running Bielecki back out for the 9th, but after a single and a walk, Lee Smith was summoned. Mark Carreon promptly singled to load the bases and Kenny Williams came on to pinch run for him. Len Dykstra then brought the Cubs within 7-5 with a single scoring one run. Still with no outs,
Jefferies delivered a win to the ecstatic fans by clearing the bases with a double in the gap. Final Score: New York 8, Chicago 7 WP- Aase 2-3, LP- L.Smith 1-4 HR- Mazzilli (4), Riles (6), D.Smith (8) G3 After this game, Mets fans had to feel that the only way to beat Chicago was to win in the bottom of the 9th. Otherwise, the teams were destined to go extra innings. This would play out again in this one. Both teams traded leads until deadlocking at 4-4 when Williams tripled home David Cone from 1st base in the bottom of the 7th. Once again the bullpens took over and the game headed to extra innings. In the 10th, the Mets started with back-to-back singles, but Johnson grounded into a DP ending the threat. The following inning, the Mets made use of an error by Dunston to bring a runner to 3B with 1 out. But, Domingo Ramos
hit a groundball to Mark Grace and he threw Carreon out at the plate and that threat was squelched. Finally, in the 14th inning after 13 consecutive Cub hitters were retired, PH Mazzilli walked with one out. After a Grace single, Lloyd McClendon singled home Mazzilli and Grace subsequently scored when McReynolds made a rare throwing error. This time, Lee Smith pitched a 1-2-3 inning for a save in the bottom of the 14th. Final Score: Chicago 6, New York 4 WP- Perry 5-1, LP- Quisenberry 8-5, SV- L.Smith (14) HR- Hubbard (2), Sandberg (17) G4 lacked the competitive drama of the previous 3 games due to Cubs' starter Scott Bankhead. However, Bankhead's manager may have cost him a chance to secure a no-hitter. In the 8th inning, Shawon Dunston was brought in for his better range at SS, but then committed an error with 2 outs which broke up
Bankhead's perfect game. This meant the Mets had their 8-9-1 hitters up in the 9th. Bankhead retired Ramos on a flyout to Smith for the first out. The no-hitter was foiled by the next batter when PH Mark Carreon rolled a 1-7 single. Bankhead completed the shutout striking out Dykstra and Teufel to end the game. Bankhead's line (9 1 0 0 0 6) was the best I've managed since joining Smiley. Final Score: Chicago 6, New York 0 WP- Bankhead 9-3, LP- Scott 6-6 HR- Howell (11), Grace (8) |
