Subject: Reds @ Pirates
The Reds dominated this series -- for the first two innings -- then a torrential downpour of adverse split cards gave us a narrow 1-run loss in game 2. But a morsel of good split card luck resulted in a win in the finale so it balanced out for a change.... Game 1: Cincy batted around in the first inning and made Kevin Gross's start a brief one, as we took an 8-0 lead after 2 innings. Pittsburgh would eventually use 8 pitchers in the game, but the biggest mistake of the contest was when the *Reds* chose to change pitchers. Jose Rijo began to tire (or get bored) with the score 10-0 in the 5th, and super-arsonist Randy Myers was summoned when the lead was cut to 10-2. Myers did not disappoint, in fact he managed to create a save opportunity for Rob Dibble by loading the bases and getting the tying run to the plate with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th! But Dibble induced Gary Redus to ground out and averted what could have been one of the all-time monster chokes. Final score: 10-6. ============================================== Game 2: Surgical split cards galore, all in one direction, assisted the Reds in blowing another lead and also the game. Three Bucco gophers, the decisive one on a HR 1-2, fb(B) 3-20, turned our 5-3 lead in the 7th into a 6-5 defeat. Cincy starter Tim Leary was ineffective as always, but at least he left with a lead. It required a mere 2 batters for Calvin Schiraldi to erase it. Another critical moment came when Don Slaught, who is about as difficult to run through as a wet napkin, turned into a plate-blocking fortress when Von Hayes tried to score earlier in the game. ============================================== Game 3: The Pirates wasted no time in jumping all over John Farrell, but each time the Pirates scored we clawed back to tie it up. Farrell was hittable, but Tom Candiotti even more so, and only our penchant for both GIDP and LOB kept the game tight. Finally in the 9th a miracle occurred when Hayes (apparently recovered from his shattering game 2 collision) tripled on a split card of 1 which plated Ricky Jordan with the winner. Final score: 4-3. Farrell hung around long enough to earn the W, and Rob Dibble caught a break in the bottom of the 9th when the tying runner tried to steal third (60%) for some reason with 2 outs and was nailed by Jeff Reed.
