Padres make the NL West race a little more interesting by losing 3 of 4. Even though they had a couple runners thrown out on the bases, Giants got low splits most of the time.. In game 1 they had 2 single 1-4's and later they also got 2 bp singles which were 1b 1 out 2-20.
game 1: The bphr splits tell the tell here. In a 1-12 park, teh first 3 were 15,15, and 5. Guess which team got both 15's and which team got the 5? The Padres took a 3-2 lead in the 6th off of former teammate Gossage. Sheffield singled and went to third when Manwaring threw Mark Parents bunt into rightfield for a 2 base error. After Whitson struck out, Gossage walked the next 2 batters to force in a run before getting Gwynn to pop out and Clark to strike out. Mitchell's aforementioned bp homer gave the Giants the lead in the 7th and they added an insurance run to make the final 5-3.
game 2: Eric Show pitched well, giving up 7 hits in 7 innings. Unfortunately, 3 of the hits were consecutive and led to all the Giants offense. Templeton homered in the 2nd to give the Padres the lead. In the third, Giants got 1b,1b, 2b, sac fly to score 3 times. After rolling a ton of 5-6 and 5-8's padres finally got the hit on 5-7 to lead off the 9th. Gwynn followed with a single and Clark doubled to make it 3-2 with 2nd and 3rd and no outs. Of course you know what happened....nothing. Gb B for a force at home, gb A that made it 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. A walk loaded the bases before Santiago struck out to end the game.
game 3: Andy Benes came in allowing just 8 hits in 20 innings. He allowed 11 in 6 in this one. Padres took a 1-0 lead in the first. That lasted 2 batters into the second as Giants got 4-5 (2b) 4-4 hr to start the inning. Padres couldn't throw out a 1-7 trailing runner in the 3rd, the next batter got an x play single and to score another run. Thompson doubled in a run in the 5th to make it a 5-2 final score.
game 4: hurst vs wills seemed like a mismatch at it was for 5 1/2 innings. Santiago hit 2 homers and SD had a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th. Walk, single, 2 base error, 2b make it 4-3. White then stole 3rd base (only the 4th sb allowed by Santiago all year) and scored when Benny threw the ball into left field to tie the game. Gwynn doubled and scored on a Stephenson single in the 7th to put the Padres back on top. Murphy worked the 9th for his 21st save.
