Game 1 Glenn Davis touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Atlanta Braves defeated the pitiful Montreal Expos 9 to 8 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Atlanta came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The critical plate appearance was by Derek Lilliquist who brought the crowd to their feet when he laced a single plating two runs. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The win was credited to Lilliquist (4-4) who went 5 innings allowing 5 runs. John Dopson (3-8) absorbed the loss. He was unable to control the Atlanta offense and allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings.
Mike Schmidt hit 3 home runs for the Expos in a losing cause.
Steve Bivens was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound; we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!' Game 2 Doug Drabek pitched 7 strong innings as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Montreal Expos by the score of 3 to 2 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Atlanta went ahead for good in the 4th inning plating one base runner on 2 base hits. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
Drabek (10-4) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Joe Boever earned the save, his 5th. Dennis Martinez (2-8) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 walks.
The Atlanta ballclub's record now stands at 39-54. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Montreal is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 29-64, worst in the division. Game 3 Center fielder Gary Pettis had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos outscored the Atlanta Braves 2 to 1.
Montreal brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning. The highlight belonged to Johnny Ray who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he bombed a two-run dinger. Atlanta had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The victory went to Mark Gardner (1-3) who went 5 innings, allowing 1 run. Jerry Reed recorded the save, his 3rd. John Smoltz (4-10) was hit with the loss. He surrendered only 2 runs and 3 hits in 7 innings.
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Rick Field after the game. 'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.' Game 4 In a one-sided affair at Fulton Co. Stadium the final score was the Montreal Expos 7, the Atlanta Braves 2.
In the 6th inning Montreal went on top for good scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Mike Schmidt began the Montreal spurt when he banged out a single. Steve Jeltz stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Tom Brookens then clubbed a three-run home run. Ron Karkovice dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Overall Montreal out-hit Atlanta 13 to 9.
Pascual Perez (8-8) got the win allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Perez got help from Jerry Reed who earned his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Chuck Finley (5-12). He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
