Subject: BAA @ MLA Week 15
(Note: No new CM for the Orioles this week.) In a four-game series at Milwaukee, the Orioles got one fun win and three heartbreaking losses. Game 1: BAA 9, MLA 2 Milwaukee starter Don August and the O’s Dave Schmidt weren’t fooling anyone in the early innings, but neither team could take full advantage of all those baserunners. Baltimore loaded the bases in the first with no outs, but could only manage one run on a Joe Orsulak sac fly. They loaded the bases *twice* in the second, scoring twice on a Brady Anderson single and a sac fly by Craig Biggio. In the bottom of the 2nd the Brewers cut the lead to 3-2 thanks to yet another SF, this time by Dave Parker, and an RBI single by Bill Spiers. Baltimore added an insurance run in the 6th thanks to Craig Worthington’s double, then watched Schmidt loaded the bases with two out before Bob McClure bailed him out with a 1/3-inning hold. In the seventh, the Orioles finally took (almost) full advantage with a four-run rally off Jaime Navarro to stretch the lead to 8-2. (I say “almost” because Larry Sheets hit an RBI single but stumbled rounding the bag and was thrown out by Spiers.) The O’s tacked on another run in the eighth, and Bill Long earned a rare 3-inning save. The two teams combined for 31 hits, but left a combined 21 men on base. All twelve Brewers hits were singles, which makes sense -- Rob Deer was the only regular on either team without a hit. Game 2: MLA 6, BAA 4 In inning two, the Brew Crew drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead on a B.J. Surhoff single. In the 3rd, Tony Phillips’ RBI single tied the game 1-1, but Bill Spiers countered with his own RBI single to put Milwaukee back up 2-1. In a wild 6th inning, back-to-back doubles by Cal Ripken and Mickey Tettleton chased Milwaukee starter Mike Flanagan and briefly put the O’s ahead 3-2, but homers by Dave Parker and Glenn Braggs chased Baltimore’s Bob Milacki and put the Brewers back on top, 6-3. The Orioles threatened in the 8th but could only muster one run as Navarro redeemed himself to get the victory in relief. Game 3: MLA 4, BAA 3 Baltimore’s Mike Devereaux figured in the game’s first three runs. He led off the game with a triple and scored on a Biggio SF, drove in a third inning run, and singled and scored in the 5th for a 2-0 Orioles lead. The Brewers had multiple opportunities against Jeff Ballard but could only touch him for one run in the bottom of the fifth on a Robin Yount groundout. But Ballard got a no-decision as the Game 1 bullpen heroes turned into goats. Long relieved Ballard in the seventh and gave up two runs before retiring his first batter. Long settled down until the ninth, when he loaded the bases and could only watch as McClure walked in the winning run. Game 4: MLA 4, BAA 3 This matchup of Jim Abbott vs. Kirk McCaskill (calling all angels!) began on rare event #1, at least for this season – a 2-out RBI from Ripken. In the third, Paul Molitor singled in a run, stole second and third, and scored on a Spiers single to put the Brewers up 2-1. Rare event #2 was superslow Larry Sheets’ fourth triple of the year. (Real 1989 total: one.) Joe Orsulak drove him across to tie the game after 4. Aggressive baserunning and a Rob Deer RBI single in the 5th gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead, but they missed an opportunity in 6th when an attempted squeeze play turned into a double play. Baltimore’s Joe Orsulak was more successful on his squeeze attempt, driving in Devereaux to tie the game in the 9th. But in the bottom of the ninth, Craig Worthington’s two-run error literally gave the game to the Brewers. Rare event #3: The Brewers stole eight bases in nine attempts. That’s not for the series, that’s for Game 4 alone. |
