Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
A series which could have easily been a sweep for the Jays doesn't come close because one team capitalized heavily on cheap BP gophers (and near-impossible BP singles), while the other did not. Guess which one.... Game 1: The Jays had a run in and 2 more in scoring position in the first with 0 outs, when the TOA batters suddenly got weak and Morris struck out the side. Morris proceeded to remain tough for the remainder of his start -- one of his best of a dismal season -- but Morris was pulled after 6 innings with the score 1-1. Then Chet Lemon blew a pair of x-plays in the 7th which helped lead to 4 Toronto runs and a 5-1 win for Pat Combs, with late help from Tom Henke. Game 2: Toronto scored early again, but not often, and had only a narrow 2-1 lead after 7 when the roof caved in on the Tigers. Final score: 11-1 and the Jays stranded 10 more while plating those 11. Mauro Gozzo got the win and Paul Gibson took the loss, though it was the DEA bullpen who suffered most of the damage. And then the gophers came out to play.... Game 3: John Cerutti had yet another start ruined by gopher bites. A pair of them in the second inning completed the Detroit scoring for the day, but that was enough. Final score: 3-2. Cerutti has now been bitten 19 times in 132 IP, and will equal the numbers on his card if he allows only 1 more in the next 83 innings. Game 4: A nice comeback, followed by the inevitable Blue Jay choke. Like Cerutti, Bud Black allowed a couple of cheap BP gophers, the most damaging one to ex-Toronto slugger Damaso Garcia. With the game tied at 4 in the 9th, Fred McGriff pulled off the enormously difficult feat of *missing* a BP homer chance (split card: 20), and Henke achieved another very low probability event when he allowed a BP single in the 10th.
