Game 1 Marquis Grissom went deep as the Montreal Expos beat the San Francisco Giants by a score of 3 to 2.
Montreal drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning scoring one runner. San Francisco had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
The winning pitcher was Dave Lapoint (2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Frank Dipino preserved the game for Lapoint, recording his 2nd. Scott Garrets (9-5) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered just 4 hits and 1 walk.
'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Lapoint said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.' Game 2 Kevin Mitchell jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4 RBI at CANDLESTICK PARK as the San Francisco Giants beat the dreadful Montreal Expos 7 to 0.
Mitchell provided much of the offense. He smashed a two-run homer in the 1st inning, doubled which was good for two runs in the 3rd inning and doubled in the 5th inning. San Francisco had 13 hits overall, while Montreal had 7.
The win was credited to Don Robinson (12-5) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Shane Rawley (1-4) was the loser. San Francisco scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 innings. Game 3 The San Francisco Giants had an easy time of it at CANDLESTICK PARK defeating the pathetic Montreal Expos by a score of 10 to 4.
Bob Knepper (4-6) earned his pay with a solid performance for San Francisco . He went 6 and 1/3 innings surrendering 5 hits and 3 walks. San Francisco had 10 hits for the game and Montreal had 6.
Knepper got relief help from Rich Gossage who gained credit for his 1st save. Mark Langston (5-8) was tagged with the loss.
San Francisco now has a record of a division leading 62-47. With the loss, the Montreal ballclub's record is 37-72, worst in the division. Game 4 At CANDLESTICK PARK , the San Francisco faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Bryn Smith (11-5) finally bested his Montreal counterpart, John Dopson (4-10), by the score of 3 to 1.
San Francisco claimed the early lead in the first inning when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Smith and San Francisco. That was all the run support Smith required. For the game San Francisco out-hit Montreal 8 to 3.
Steve Bedrosian earned his 23rd save. Dopson took the loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks.
