Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers & Twins
The Jays sweep the Rangers and have just enough left in the tank to split with Minnesota.... TEA Game 1: Dave Stieb and the Jays eked out a 4-3 win over Nolan Ryan and the Rangers, overcoming Ryan's solid performance and the efforts of Texas catcher Bob "Babe" Geren. Geren went 4 for 4 and homered twice and was the hero for the Rangers, but third baseman John '4e37' Russell was the goat. Russell easily converted 3 of 4 of his x-chances (as 4e37's nearly always do against the Jays) but the one he fluffed led to 3 unearned runs and hung an undeserved loss on Ryan, whose record falls to 10-11. Game 2: Led by Greg Briley's 5 for 5 day in which he nearly hit for the cycle (missing just a triple, but he did homer twice) Toronto accumulated 23 hits and scored 15 times while LOBbing 12 more. Final score: 15-5. TOA starter Mauro Gozzo was hit hard as usual but Texas's Bobby Witt lasted less than 2 innings and the 5 relievers who followed were not significantly more effective. All Blue Jay batters aside from Lloyd Moseby had at least 2 hits. ========================================== MNA Game 1: A pitching mismatch between the unhittable Sid Fernandez and John "SuperGopher" Cerutti remained oddly scoreless until Cerutti gophered up a solo shot to Brian Harper in the MNA 5th on a fortuitous split card (there is no homer so unlikely that Cerutti can't allow it) and Toronto's fate was sealed in the next frame when Gene Larkin surgically avoided all of the inning-ending gb(A)'s in his column, making an out but keeping things alive for the inevitable cheap BP gopher by the very next batter. Final score: 3-0. El Sid allowed just 3 hits & 1 walk in 7 innings for Minnesota. Game 2: The Twins recorded 3 consecutive 2-out singles in the 4th to erase Toronto's 1-0 lead; that plus the 11 LOB we were in the process of amassing made it look like another defeat was in the works. But the Jays got some 2-out lightning of our own in the 6th and finally vanquished Ron Darling. The Jays then tacked on some insurance in the 9th and left town with an 8-2 win. Bud Black went the distance for the visitors, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks. Toronto catcher Ron Hassey tied a record when he registered 3 putouts in the first inning, none of them on strikeouts.
