Mike Schmidt has officially retired at the end of this series. Been a great ride.
Game 1 Right fielder Mike Felder had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at SHEA STADIUM where the Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets 7 to 6.
New York NL surrendered all of the runs Montreal needed in the 2nd inning showing no mercy on New York NL as they plated 7 runs on 8 hits. That was all Ted Power (2-3) needed. New York NL had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Power was helped out by Jerry Reed who recorded his 6th save. Frank Viola (9-4) was tagged with the loss. 'This was a tough loss,' said Jon Fellows, 'the kind that sticks with you for awhile.' Game 2 Gary Pettis had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the Montreal Expos bested the New York NL Mets 10 to 7 at SHEA STADIUM.
New York NL was unable to climb back into it after Montreal went ahead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Spike Owen started the rally when he drew a walk. Shane Rawley was next and he drew a walk. Pettis then hit a single, and an error was also committed. After another out, Johnny Ray came to the plate and lashed a single. Montreal banged out 15 hits on the night.
Rawley (2-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings and allowing 5 runs. The losing pitcher was Mike Scott (7-10). He was unable to control the Montreal offense and allowed 9 hits and 6 walks in 6 innings. Game 3 Dennis Martinez went 9 solid innings as the Montreal Expos defeated the New York NL Mets by the score of 7 to 0 at SHEA STADIUM.
Martinez (3-10) was simply too much for the New York NL batters. He allowed just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.63 to 3.41. Montreal had a total of 11 hits for the game.
The loss was charged to Scott Terry (7-8). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings. 'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Martinez . 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went well.' Game 4 In a tight game it was the New York NL Mets 5, the dreadful Montreal Expos 3 at SHEA STADIUM.
New York NL brought 4 runs across the plate in the 7th inning when they came up with 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Kevin McReynolds who brought a roar from the partisan SHEA STADIUM fans when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
The winning pitcher was Bob Ojeda (7-3) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Ojeda got help from John Franco who earned his 24th save. Dave Lapoint (2-2) was the loser.
'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Ojeda said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'
