Subject: Tigers @ Yankees
For a brief moment, the Tigers were again in the pennant race (only because of our opponent), and the pitching surprisingly rose to the occasion, with the exception of game 3. Detroit had 3 complete games, 2 shutouts, and 3 wins. It looked a lot like 1968 out there.... Game 1: Jerry Johnson threw a 2-hitter, and walked only one Yankee in a 3-0 whitewash. Jerry Johnson starting against a contender? Before Orioles fans accuse us of collusion with the enemy, please note that Johnson's ERA is now lower than that of the man he beat (18-game winner Mel Stottlemyre). Norm Cash had 2 hits and smacked his 26th homer of 1969; the Yankees would not homer in the series. Game 2: Denny McLain goes the route in a 2-1 victory, the winning run scoring in the Detroit ninth. Fritz Peterson pitched well for New York but drops to 17-12 as McLain raises his record to 17-18. McLain has a very outside chance at both 20 wins and 20 losses, and should be more like 22-13 right about now. Tiger centerfielders (Northrup & Stanley) each gunned a Yankee runner at the plate over the course of the first 2 games of the series. Game 3: A matchup of wild men: Joe Sparma vs. Bill Burbach. Sparma has pitched his best (whatever that is) in 1969 against top opposition, but not on this day: 14 baserunners and 9 runs allowed in 3 IP. Earl Wilson and Pat Dobson provided 5 innings of clutch scoreless relief, pitching brilliantly as they normally do when we're down by 9 or more runs. Every Yankee starter except Horace Clarke had at least one hit; the Yanks' 11 hits were 10 singles and an Ernie Banks double; Sparma commented that he felt "like we were beaten to death by squirrels". Game 4: Detroit rebounded on the strength of a Mickey Lolich 6-hit shutout over Dick Ellsworth. Ellsworth threw a complete game as well, but was saddled with the 2-0 defeat. Alan |
