Game 1 Dwight Gooden reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the New York NL Mets defeated the hapless Montreal Expos in 11 innings 4 to 3 at SHEA STADIUM.
The score was tied at 2 after nine. New York NL won the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. Mookie Wilson started the attack as he blasted a solo shot. After an out was recorded, Howard Johnson came up and he clubbed a solo home run. New York NL had a total of 8 hits for the game.
Dan Quisenberry (10-8) allowed 1 run in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Frank Dipino (2-9) took the loss in relief. The New York NL ballclub's record now stands at 69-62. With the loss, the Montreal ballclub's record is 47-84, worst in the division. Game 2 One run was the difference at SHEA STADIUM as the New York NL Mets defeated the pathetic Montreal Expos 4 to 3.
Scott Terry (9-8) earned his pay with a solid performance for New York NL. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. Montreal threatened in the 9th but New York NL was able to put down the rally.
John Franco earned the save, his 28th. Dave Lapoint (3-4) was tagged with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 innings of work.
'We won because we did the little things right.' Jon Fellows said after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.' Game 3 Dave Magadan lofted one into the 'cheap seats' as the New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by a score of 5 to 4.
David Cone (12-5) pitched well for New York NL in their victory. He went 8 innings allowing 5 hits and 6 walks. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Cone got help from Dan Quisenberry who was credited with his 2nd save. Pascual Perez (12-11) ended up with the loss. Jon Fellows was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.' Game 4 Ernie Whitt had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at SHEA STADIUM where the New York NL Mets beat the dreadful Montreal Expos 4 to 3.
New York NL came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning plating 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Gregg Jefferies led off and started the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. One out later, Darryl Strawberry got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Kevin McReynolds then banged out a single. Whitt followed next and he delivered a base-hit. Jerry Reed then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball. John Franco earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 29th save.
Don Aase (4-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no runs. Reed (0-8) was charged with the loss in relief.
With this win, New York NL has a 72-62 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Montreal is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 47-87, worst in the division.
