Subject: TOA-BOA, game 3
In this battle of titans, today's contest was truly "strength against strength". Boston did what they are good at: cheap ballpark singles galore (not even one for Toronto), perfectly executed critical hit & run plays, great luck on split cards. And for a change they didn't rack up many LOB at all. Toronto did what we are good at: blowing a pair of 2-run leads, timely bullpen meltdowns, $ clutch chokes at the plate, critical unearned runs, and (let's not forget the big one) choking away a pennant. The Jays drew first blood when Fred McGriff actually decided to swing the bat in the first instead of taking a walk, and Mac deposited a 2-run homer into the stands off of Mike Boddicker. Jimmy Key to the rescue! A surgical third inning (single, single, single, double, single) gave Boston a 3-2 lead, which lasted only a few seconds because little Nelson Liriano got Toronto's one split card break of the day and matched McGriff's 2-run homer with one of his own in the 4th. George Bell singled McGriff home in the 5th to make the score 5-3, but Key took the mound moments later determined to wipe out that advantage -- and did just that. Not content to rely on Boston's prodigious offensive ability for his demise, Key committed a "key" error which plated what might be the most costly unearned run of the season. Key & Boddicker eventually departed with the score tied at 5 and turned the outcome over to their respective bullpens. The inevitable occurred in the Boston 10th when with one out Rafael Ramirez drew a walk (!) and was singled to third on a perfectly timed hit & run play by Willie Randolph. Duane Ward hung tough against Wade Boggs, working the count full, but the Blue Jay reliever finally succumbed to Strat Law and choked up the game losing single. Final score: 6-5. Scheduled pitchers for the important series finale are Rod Nichols (what?!?) for Toronto, against Larry McWilliams for Boston. There are rumors that Nichols' 1989 debut may be postponed so that an actual major league pitcher can start instead. Alan |
