If you were told that one of these teams choked away an 8-1 lead today, you would surely know which one (and you would surely be right). But that team greatly angered the Strat Gods -- and will pay dearly very soon -- by winning anyway despite massive odds against such a thing.... Inspired by their manager's uncommonly sensible decision to use an unfatigued Dave Stieb in place of AAA cannon-fodder Rod Nichols for this important contest, the Toronto offense came out on fire and we almost had a repeat of game 2 in reverse. Boston's Larry McWilliams retired the first batter he faced, then allowed the next 6 to reach base. L. Mac was exiled to the showers after the score became 5-0 and Bob Stanley took over. Stanley was chased in the 4th after permitting 2 more runs while failing to register an out and the Jays led 7-0. Make it 8. Manny Lee's homer leading off the fifth nicked Mike Smithson for a run and before the inning was over the Sox were on their 4th pitcher of the day, though Bill Krueger did get the Jays to LOB a pair of runners and then proceeded to pitch well for nearly 4 innings. Stieb may have been unfatigued at the start of the game, but perhaps watching all those runs score exhausted him. Stieb was prepped for surgery in the bottom of the 6th (walk, single, single, single) and Tom Henke brought his highest octane in relief (double, double) at which point even Rod Nichols seemed like a good option (wrong again). When the scalpel was finally put down, that 8-0 lead was 8-6 and shrinking fast. The inning ended at last when David Wells came in and Wade Boggs was gunned trying to steal second (CS #1) before Wells could face a batter, foreshadowing the theme for Toronto's miracle victory after we completed the "miracle" choke. Which took a mere 2 batters (double, double) leading off the Boston 7th. 8-8. Boston got a leadoff double again in the 8th, but with the runner on 3rd and just 1 out, Randy Kutcher missed the pitch on a squeeze attempt and Jody Reed was DOA at home plate (CS#2). Mike Marshall seemed to win the game for Toronto with his solo homer in the 9th, but there was that little matter of our lifelong enemy known as "the bottom of the ninth". Sure enough, Dwight Evans gophered one off of Xavier Hernandez (all the real pitchers were tired) and the score was 9-9. One single later we had to resort to starter Bud Black in relief, and told him he was going the distance however long it took. That distance would have been very short, and yet ANOTHER Toronto choke for the record books, except: Greenwell singled after Dewey's gopher -- and was gunned down trying for second (CS#3). After another single, pinch runner Ellis Burks was.... you guessed it (CS#4). The contest went to the 10th where the Jays got some runners, followed by a timely GIDP. Boston threatened mildly in the bottom of the 10th but FINALLY in the 11th Mark Knudson allowed Joe Price's runner to score, Black got Boston to go 3-and-out in the bottom of the frame and the Jays escaped Fenway with a split that should have been better. He even had 4 hits today, all hail series MVP Lance "Howitzer" Parrish. Alan |
