Orioles and Yankees split a wild series with two extra inning games, 3 HBPs, 3 balks, 6 pinch-runners, 18 steals, 11 caught stealing, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Game 1:               NYA 3, BAA 1

After a second inning RBI single by New York’s Roberto Kelly, Baltimore’s Mickey Tettleton hit his 13th HR of the season to tie the game at 1-1 after 4.  Steve Sax stole a base in the sixth and scored on Jesse Barfield’s single off Orioles starter Brian Holton.  Mike Gallego tacked on a solo HR off reliever Dave Johnson for a 3-1 lead, and Yankees starter John Candelaria and reliever Roger McDowell made it stick.

Game 2:               BAA 2, NYA 1

The score makes this game sound much more exciting that the first eight innings really were.  A Steve Sax steal and a Don Mattingly single put the Yankees up 1-0 in the first.  In the 4th Baltimore tied it in a “rally”; even though New York’s Doyle Alexander yielded three walks, one HBP, and a passed ball, all the O’s makeshift lineup could muster was a groundout RBI.  After the Orioles ran themselves out of another potential rally in the 7th, starter Bill Long gave way to Todd Frohwirth, who pitched two scoreless innings and stood to get the win when Franklin Stubbs’ pinch-hit single brought Cal Ripken home with the go-ahead run.  Stubbs switched from here to goat with a two base error, and a daring steal of 3rd by Yankees pinch-runner Eric Yelding put the tying run on third with no outs, but Gregg Olson induced a lineout and got two strikeouts to earn perhaps the best of his 27 saves so far this season.  Ripken had a fine game, going 1-for-2 with two walks and making a heads-up play to nail Mattingly after he rounded first.

Game 3:               BAA 6, NYA 5 (14)

This time it was Baltimore that got a steal (by Daryl Boston) and a single (by Craig Biggio) to take a first-inning lead against NY’s Pete Smith.  Steve Balboni tied it in the 2nd with a solo homer off Pete Harnisch.  Biggio got another RBI single, stole second, and scored on a Ripken single to put the O’s back on top 3-1, but Harnisch walked his way into trouble and the Yankees led 4-3 after 3.  In the 5th the Yankees were thrown out on two of three steals, but the successful steal and a balk got Roberto Kelly around the bases for an insurance run.  Stubbs came through again off the bench in the 7th with a two-run double off reliever Rich Monteleone to tie the game at 5-5; in the bottom of the inning, Baltimore reliever Cecilio Guante started a 1-2-3 double play to get out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam, the start of some fine relief work by both bullpens.  The game remained 5-5 until the top of the 14th, when Orioles waiver wire pickup Dave Collins drove in Tony Phillips for a 6-5 lead and Olson again slammed the door.

Biggio had a great game, going 4-for-7 with two doubles to go with those RBI singles.  But the game was really decided by defense, as Baltimore turned three double plays, threw out three of four Yankees steal attempts, and got two unearned runs off Steve Lyons errors.

Game 4:               NYA 7, BAA 5 (11)

Aggressive baserunning again paid off, this time in Yelding’s steal in the 3rd that led to a 1-0 Yankees lead.  Orioles starter Bob Milacki pitched well until the 6th, when his manager failed to notice an unusually high pitch count and the Yankees feasted for a 4-0 lead.  The Orioles did some aggressive running of their own to close the gap to 4-3 in the 7th.  Of course, they couldn’t run aggressively with leadfooted Mickey Tettleton, so instead he homered in the 8th for a 4-4 tie that lasted into the 11th.  With two on and two out, Edwin Nunez entered the game and promptly balked home the go-ahead run.  But Nunez got a richly undeserved victory thanks to the depleted Orioles bullpen.  With the tying run at second, Guante pitched around the red-hot Roberto Kelly to face Don Mattingly, who was 1-for-21 in the series before his two-out, three-run walkoff HR.

New York’s star of the series was Steve Sax, who went 8-for-17 with five steals.
